The Lerin LTSB-14 is a 14mm flat spade bit for boring through timber with a corded or cordless drill. It is manufactured from high carbon steel with full-length heat treatment, and finished in black oxide to resist corrosion. The LTSB-14 carries a hex shank, a precision-ground centre point, and a chisel edge ground at a positive angle for fast starts in softwood and hardwood.
Boring an oversized hole wastes effort and removes timber that the member would rather keep, particularly in studs and joists that carry load. The smaller diameters get reached for constantly on a rough-in, then blunt first because they take the most holes. The LTSB-14 opens a 14mm penetration for compact runs, and its full-length heat treatment resists the bending that punishes narrow bits under side load. The precision-ground centre point holds the mark instead of skating across the grain.
A 14mm cut removes less timber than the larger diameters, so the drill draws less torque and the operator fights less kickback overhead. The hex shank seats securely in a chuck or hex bit holder rather than rotating in the jaws. Chip-clearing geometry clears waste steadily, which matters most in the narrower flutes where packed shavings would otherwise slow the cut.
The LTSB-14 is a timber-boring bit and is not intended for masonry, steel, or tile. High carbon steel holds a fine edge in timber, so striking embedded nails or screws will blunt or chip the cutting edge. Inspect the cavity for existing services and hidden fixings before boring, and treat a damaged edge as a replacement rather than a repair.
(LTSB-14)
Choose 14mm when the run is compact and a wider hole would remove more timber than the job needs. Smaller penetrations preserve more of the member and draw less torque from the drill through each hole.
The LTSB-14 is manufactured from high carbon steel and heat treated along its full length rather than at the tip alone. It is finished in black oxide, which resists corrosion and reduces friction during the cut.
The bit has a hex shank, which seats in a standard drill chuck or a hex bit holder and resists rotating in the jaws. It runs from either a corded drill or a cordless drill.
Sparky Direct stocks the Lerin SharpEdge range in 14mm, 18mm (LTSB-18), 20mm (LTSB-20), 22mm (LTSB-22), 25mm (LTSB-25), and 32mm (LTSB-32). A three-piece 20, 22 and 25mm set is available as LTSB-SET202225.
The precision-ground centre point bites where it is positioned, which holds the bit on the mark as the cut begins. Starting at low speed and letting the point seat before increasing pressure gives the cleanest entry.
The hang hole takes a hook for storage on a board or in a bag. It also accepts a draw wire, so cable can be pulled back through the penetration immediately after boring it.
The LTSB-14 is a timber-boring bit and is not intended for masonry, steel, or tile. Striking embedded nails or screws will blunt or chip the edge, so check the cavity for hidden fixings and existing services first.
