Find the best Double Power Points here at Sparky Direct. [ Read More ]
Double power points are the workhorse of Australian electrical layouts. A single wall plate carries two socket outlets, each rated for a standard 10A plug under AS/NZS 3112. The term GPO simply means General Purpose Outlet. It is the common trade label used by electricians, builders and wholesalers across the country.
Doubles outpace single power points in almost every space because two appliances can run from the same wall position without resorting to double adaptors or power boards. They also sit at a different price and footprint tier from quad power points, which provide four sockets where device density is unusually high.
In residential settings, doubles appear in kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, laundries, garages and home offices. Commercial fit-outs use them in offices, reception areas, retail counters, workstations and accommodation rooms. Trade buyers also specify them in bulk for new builds, rental upgrades and multi-dwelling construction projects where outlet consistency matters.
Practical examples include a TV with a soundbar, a kettle with a toaster, a computer with a monitor, or a phone charger with a lamp. Higher-draw pairings such as two heaters or two air fryers should be reviewed for combined load by a licensed electrician.
Double GPOs differ by function, finish, protection level and intended application. The right pick depends on where the outlet sits, what plugs into it, and the visual standard for the room.
| Type | Best for | Key feature |
|---|---|---|
| Standard switched | General indoor use | Individual switches, lowest cost |
| Slimline | Renovations, splashbacks | Low-profile plate |
| USB and USB-C | Bedrooms, kitchens, offices | Integrated charging ports |
| Weatherproof | Outdoor and exposed areas | IP-rated covers and seals |
| Smart | Automation, energy monitoring | Remote switching and scheduling |
| Double pole | Specified isolation needs | Switches active and neutral |
Standard models cover general indoor use and dry locations. Each socket has its own switch for everyday isolation. These are usually the most cost-effective option and remain the dominant format across Australian homes, rentals and offices.
Slimline plates sit flatter against the wall than traditional ranges. They suit modern interiors, splashbacks, joinery and visible living areas where a thinner profile reads cleaner. Many buyers also match slimline power points to coordinated light switches, dimmers and data points across the room for a consistent finish.
Integrated USB power points add charging ports directly on the outlet, so phones, tablets and earbuds can charge without a plug-in adaptor. USB-A handles older cables. USB-C with Power Delivery support can charge faster, depending on the outlet wattage. Bedrooms, kitchens, study areas, offices and accommodation fit-outs are the most common locations. Wattage ratings vary by model, so buyers should compare specifications against the devices being charged.
Weatherproof double GPOs cover patios, garages, sheds, gardens, pool equipment zones and outdoor work areas. They use rated covers, gaskets and seals to suit damp or exposed locations. Browse weatherproof GPOs or the dedicated double weatherproof GPO range for outdoor projects. The IP rating, mounting location and circuit protection must all be assessed by a licensed electrician to meet AS/NZS 3000.
Smart double power points add remote switching, scheduling, automation and energy monitoring where the model supports it. Common uses include smart-home setups, rental energy management, office equipment scheduling and standby load reduction. The smart power points range carries Zigbee, WiFi and hybrid models. All units must still meet Australian electrical product compliance.
Double pole switching isolates both the active and neutral conductors when the application calls for it. Specifiers may also choose heavier mechanisms, stronger plates or commercial-rated ranges for high-cycle locations. Appliances such as larger air conditioners, workshop equipment, caravan supplies and some kitchen units may need a 15A outlet or a dedicated circuit instead of a standard 10A double GPO.
The right double GPO starts with the load it will carry, the location it sits in, the environment around it and the appliances that will use it. A licensed electrician confirms which option suits the circuit.
Most household devices fall into low or moderate-demand categories. High-draw items such as heaters, kettles, toasters and portable air conditioners can push combined load close to the circuit limit. Running two high-draw appliances from the same double GPO is rarely a good idea. Always check the appliance nameplate ratings and have circuit suitability confirmed by a licensed electrician.
Standard double power points are 10A outlets sized for everyday household and office loads. Some appliances need 10 amp power points while others require 15 amp power points or a dedicated circuit altogether. A 15A plug has a larger earth pin and must never be forced or adapted into a 10A socket. Typical 15A use cases include larger air conditioners, workshop equipment, some commercial kitchen items and caravan supply.
There is no single universal number. The answer depends on expected load, cable size, circuit protection device, RCD or RCBO arrangement, installation environment and the applicable standards. New outlets, renovations and commercial fit-outs need a licensed electrician to assess circuit capacity and confirm compliance with AS/NZS 3000.
Standard double power point dimensions vary by brand and range, but most Australian products are built around common wall box and mounting formats. Horizontal versus vertical orientation depends on cabinetry, splashbacks, furniture clearance and accessibility needs. Installation height is not a fixed universal rule. It depends on room use, regulations, accessibility planning and the electrician's design. Use mounting blocks where the wall finish requires a surface-mount approach rather than a flush wall box.
Brand choice affects appearance, accessory compatibility, replacement consistency and long-term maintenance. Electricians often standardise on one brand across a project for matching wall plates, mechanisms and accessories.
The major brands carried by Australian wholesalers include Clipsal (a Schneider Electric brand), HPM, Hager, Legrand and Trader. Electricians often favour established brands for availability, replacement consistency, documentation and compliance confidence. Clipsal power points remain the most widely specified across new builds and renovations, while Legrand power points and Trader power points offer competitive trade-grade options.
The Clipsal Iconic power points family is widely chosen for modern renovations and new builds. The interchangeable skin design lets buyers swap covers between white, anthracite, silver shadow and other finishes without changing the mechanism. The range coordinates with matching switches, dimmers, USB plates and data points. The Clipsal Iconic Outdoor range extends the same modular look to weatherproof zones.
Both brands are well established and meet Australian standards. Clipsal usually has wider local availability through electrical wholesalers and stronger accessory support, particularly in the Iconic, Classic and Pro Series ranges. HPM remains a familiar retail brand with broad finish options at competitive price points. Neither brand is universally better. The right choice usually matches the existing plate style in the building, the project budget, durability needs and stock availability.
Common finishes include vivid white, matte white, black, anthracite, silver shadow and metallic tones. The Clipsal Prestige and Hager Silhouette ranges target premium interiors with cleaner lines and reduced bezel. Buyers matching power points to power point covers, light switches, dimmers and data outlets across a room should specify all components from the same family to keep the finish consistent.
Build quality matters in high-use locations such as kitchens, laundries and commercial sites. Things to compare include switch feel, plate strength, terminal quality, brand support and the availability of matching accessories. The lowest upfront price can carry a hidden cost if the mechanism wears quickly or the range gets discontinued during a long project.
Projects need outlet planning before fit-off. A clear material list reduces site delays and helps electricians keep the finish consistent across rooms.
Kitchen outlets must balance appearance, moisture proximity, heat from cooktops, appliance zones and finish selection. Slimline plates and USB-C options are common picks for visible splashback runs. Placement near sinks, cooktops and wet areas must be planned by a licensed electrician to meet Australian wiring requirements and any local council overlays.
The decision factors include wall space, existing wiring condition, circuit capacity, outlet condition, compliance with current standards and product fit. This is licensed electrical work and is not a DIY job. An electrician will assess the cable, the box and the circuit before fitting a new double GPO.
Multi-room and multi-dwelling projects rely on consistent product across the site. Value packs and carton quantities help keep finish, brand and mechanism aligned. Practical procurement factors include stock availability, dispatch speed, matching switches and accessories, and trade-friendly ordering. Project schedules also benefit from confirming stock depth at the order stage rather than at rough-in.
Commercial spaces need durable mechanisms, workstation density, cable management and access for maintenance. USB-C variants suit hot-desk layouts and meeting rooms. Match outlets with appropriate cable management and data outlets for clean workstation builds.
Worn, cracked or outdated outlets often need replacement between tenancies. Robust standard models with a consistent finish are the typical choice for high-turnover environments. Any sign of heat, scorch marks, buzzing or visible damage means the outlet should be inspected by a licensed electrician before any further use.
Compliance sits at the centre of safe double power point selection and installation. The product must meet Australian standards, and the installation must be carried out by a licensed electrician.
AS/NZS 3112 covers the plug and socket configuration used across Australia and New Zealand. AS/NZS 3000, often called the Wiring Rules, covers installation requirements, circuit protection rules and location-specific obligations. Compliant products should be suitable for Australian use and sourced through reputable electrical suppliers with traceable brand and model numbers.
Fixed power point installation, replacement, relocation and conversion must be carried out by a licensed electrician in Australia. This is not a DIY job. The reasons cover shock risk, fire risk, load assessment, correct termination, RCD or RCBO protection and legal compliance with state electrical safety laws.
An RCD trips the circuit when it detects current leaking to earth, reducing shock risk. An RCBO combines that earth-leakage function with overcurrent protection in one device. Both are core parts of modern circuit protection for outdoor, kitchen, laundry, garage and other high-use power point circuits. Device selection is the electrician's call based on the circuit design.
Stop using the outlet immediately and contact a licensed electrician if you notice any warning signs. These signs include: a cracked faceplate, loose outlet feel, scorch or burn marks, buzzing sounds, intermittent power, heat from the plate, burning smell, damaged switch action or poor plug grip. Visible damage, heat or burning smells point to a fault that may pose shock or fire risk.
Pros of switched double GPOs include convenient appliance isolation, reduced standby use and safer unplugging. Cons include slightly more mechanism complexity and the potential for switch wear in very high-use areas, which favours stepping up to a commercial-grade range. Switched GPOs are still the dominant Australian format and are what most buyers should expect to fit.
Pricing comparisons across suppliers need a structured approach. The exact brand, model, finish, certification and quantity all matter when comparing quotes.
Compare like for like. Brand, exact model number, finish, certification markings, quantity, delivery cost and stock availability all influence the real cost. Electrical wholesalers are generally better suited to trade quantities, consistent product ranges and matching accessories. Hardware stores can suit one-off retail purchases but may stock a narrower trade range.
Value ranges, bulk packs and standard white models are cost-effective options without sacrificing safety. The risk lies in non-compliant, unbranded or unclear-marketplace listings. Always check the brand, model number, compliance markings and Australian standards suitability before ordering. Suspiciously cheap unbranded outlets are not worth the safety risk on a customer's site.
Stock reliability matters when electricians are booked and project timelines are fixed. Confirming carton quantities and dispatch speed early avoids rough-in delays. Planning the material list before rough-in and fit-off stages helps keep matching accessories such as mounting blocks, wall boxes, mechanisms, USB models, weatherproof variants and cover plates aligned.
Useful reviews cover fit, finish, switch feel, USB charging performance, packaging quality and consistency with existing ranges. For trade buyers, the key signals are repeatability, stock depth, brand consistency and easy reordering across multiple jobs. Customer feedback on the same product across multiple buyers offers a clearer picture than a single rating.
Buyers comparing outlet types often also look at safety switches, switch mechanisms and extension leads as part of a complete order. Brand-specific weatherproof options are available in the Clipsal weatherproof and Hager weatherproof ranges.

This has to be one of the best designed products I have ever installed. Clever waterproof seals throughout and multiple cable entry points. Also, the design has the sockets facing outward and not down making plugging in devices much easier rather than having to crouch down to see the slots. Just one note, devices need to have an earth pin to open the shutter so phone chargers will need to be plugged into an extension lead or plug board
Very happy with these Hager Silhouette power points. It was a tough call between these and the Finesse range but we opted for the Silhouette and couldn't be happier. The switch has a nice solid click, the matte finish feels luxury yet simple. Can't wait to have our sparky install these in our kitchen on the stone splashback!
Clipsal are easy to installed, and never problem with them. So with most of the cheap ones on market, if some before has not left much cable to play with. The cable wont fit, because the pins it the rear power point don't line up. So with the great price sparky direct sells them for, why risk your time or having to come back to fix customer problem on your time.
