Clipsal Iconic Network Connectivity is the data and AV side of the Iconic switch system. It uses the same modular mechanisms, grids and skin covers as Iconic light switches and power points. Each network mechanism (RJ45 Cat 6, RJ12 telephone, F-type antenna, HDMI, Krone adaptor) clips into a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 gang grid plate. That grid then accepts an Iconic skin in white, ash grey, silver, anthracite or black to match the rest of the wall.
The Iconic mechanism is slimmer than the older 2000 Series and uses a clip-in skin design rather than fixed faceplates. With the 2000 Series, swapping a data outlet meant changing the whole plate. With Iconic, the installer drops the new mechanism into the same grid and the existing skin clicks straight back on. This shortens upgrade time and reduces stockholding for jobs that mix power, data and AV.
Even with strong Wi-Fi infrastructure, hard-wired data cabling still anchors most residential and commercial installations. Streaming devices, security cameras, networked printers, VoIP handsets, smart televisions and wireless access points all operate more reliably on Cat 6 structured cabling than on radio frequency. Specifying network outlets at the wall during rough-in is far cheaper than retrofitting later, and the Iconic range lets the data outlets share the same look as the lighting and power.
Structured cabling refers to a planned, standards-based cable system rather than ad-hoc patch runs. It supports current network speeds and leaves room for future upgrades. Iconic network outlets terminate on the wall side of that structured system, with cables landing in a data cabinet at the head end. Good structured cabling extends the useful life of a building and reduces callbacks.
The core data offering is the 40RJ45SMA6C Cat 6 RJ45 socket, available in translucent (TN), black (BK) and other finishes that match the Iconic skin colours. There is also the 40RJ64SMT Cat 3 telephone connector for RJ12 voice circuits, plus the 40ADPKS adaptor that lets installers terminate using Krone, Tyco or Siemon punchdown patterns. Ethernet wall sockets sit alongside these options for non-Iconic installations.
USB charging sits across two parts of the Iconic family. The dedicated USB power points combine 240V sockets with USB-A and USB-C charging in one mechanism. For data USB and direct device connection, separate USB charging mechanisms drop into the same grid system. Buyers shopping the wider Clipsal Iconic power points range will find the USB-equipped options listed there.
The 40HDMIA HDMI adaptor mechanism gives a wall-flush HDMI socket for TVs, projectors and AV racks, with an angled rear connection so the cable bends inside the wall cavity rather than poking out. F-type and PAL antenna sockets cover digital TV runs. For broader AV and antenna jobs, the TV outlets, connectors and HDMI category lists the matching cables, splitters and brackets.
Iconic also covers network-enabled switching through the Clipsal Iconic Wiser range. Wiser Zigbee push-button mechanisms, dimmers and the Wiser Hub let standard light circuits join the home network. They share the same grid and skin system as the data outlets, so a single wall plate can carry an RJ45 socket and a smart switch behind matching skins.
Iconic uses three layers. The mechanism is the working part: the RJ45 socket, the switch contacts, the dimmer electronics. The grid is the metal or polymer plate that holds 1 to 6 mechanisms in a fixed pattern. The skin is the visible cover that clips onto the grid. Buyers select these as separate parts so a job can be roughed in with white skins and finished in coloured skins later.
Flush wall mounting is the standard fit, sitting in a 35mm wall box behind the grid. Surface mount uses a Clipsal architrave block where the wall cavity is too shallow. Raised floor and bench applications use cable entry plates and recessed boxes from the cable entry plates range to keep cabling neat through joinery and study wall panels.
One of the strengths of the Iconic system is that a single grid can carry mixed mechanisms. A common workstation plate carries one 10A switched socket on the left and one Cat 6 RJ45 socket on the right, both behind a matching white skin. The grid plates are listed in the Iconic switch grids and surrounds category.
Modular architecture means a Cat 6 mechanism can be upgraded to a Cat 6A specification, or a telephone outlet swapped to RJ45, without disturbing the painted finish or the grid plate. The mechanism unclips, the new one clicks in, and the same skin goes back on. This is especially useful in fitouts that change tenancy or technology mid-life.
Wiser smart home devices use Zigbee for control and benefit from a stable IP backbone. Cat 6 outlets installed at TV points, study desks and AV cabinets give a hard-wired path for the Wiser Hub, smart speakers and hubs that prefer Ethernet over Wi-Fi. Pairing Iconic data outlets with the Clipsal Iconic Wiser mechanisms produces a clean integrated install.
C-Bus is a separate Clipsal automation protocol used in larger residential and commercial projects. C-Bus runs on its own pink-sheathed cable, but the head-end controllers and touch screens still need IP connectivity. Cat 6 RJ45 outlets at controller locations connect those gateways to the building network and to remote management portals.
Power over Ethernet (PoE) lets a single Cat 6 cable carry both data and DC power to access points, IP cameras, VoIP phones and small displays. The Iconic Cat 6 socket is compatible with PoE, PoE+ and PoE++ runs as long as the structured cabling, patch panels and patch leads are also rated for it. Buyers can check the patch leads range for matching Cat 6 cords.
Network-enabled switches such as the Wiser push-button mechanisms allow grouping, scheduling and remote control without rewiring. They keep the manual switch action that occupants expect and add app and voice control on top. For an end customer, the only visible change is the addition of a small status LED on the dolly.
Residential jobs typically use Cat 6 RJ45 outlets at TVs, studies, kitchens and main bedrooms, with one or two outlets per location. Commercial fitouts run higher density, with two to four data outlets per workstation and a structured ratio of voice, data and PoE outlets. Iconic suits both scales because the same mechanism works in single and multi-gang grids.
Cat 6 supports 1 Gigabit Ethernet across the full 100 metre channel and 10 Gigabit Ethernet across shorter runs of around 37 to 55 metres. Cat 6A supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet across the full 100 metre channel. For homes, Cat 6 is generally adequate. For commercial, healthcare and education projects with 10G aggregation requirements, Cat 6A is the safer specification.
Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cabling is the default specification for most Australian residential and light commercial installations. Shielded twisted pair (STP and FTP) is selected where electromagnetic interference is a concern, such as runs that share trays with high-current cabling or sit close to large variable speed drives. Shielded modules require continuous shield bonding back to the patch panel earth.
Iconic network mechanisms ship in translucent (TN) or finish-matched colours so they read correctly through coloured skins. The visible colour comes from the skin, not the mechanism. White, ash grey, anthracite, black, silver and crowne (silver-edged) are the common finishes used to match a project's interior palette.
RJ45 sockets terminate to either the T568A or T568B pin pattern. Pick one pattern and use it for the whole site. Mixing the two creates crossed pairs that fail certification. After termination, every link should be tested with a certified network cable tester for wire map, length, NEXT and return loss against the relevant Cat 6 or Cat 6A standard.
Cat 6 and Cat 6A cables have a minimum bend radius of four times the cable diameter. Tighter bends cause signal loss and can fail certification. Inside wall cavities, leave a service loop of around 200 to 300mm at the outlet so future re-terminations have slack to work with. The cable management range covers the cleats and ties for this work.
All fixed cabling work that connects to the public telecommunications network in Australia must be performed by a registered ACMA cabler. The cabling must comply with AS/CA S009 and the relevant AS/CA S008 wiring rules. Iconic mechanisms are tested to those standards and ship with the required compliance markings.
The most common mistakes are over-untwisting pairs at the termination and exceeding bend radius limits. Other frequent errors include mixing T568A and T568B patterns on the same site, and running data cables in the same conduit as 240V power without the required separation. Each of these can pass a basic continuity test but fail certified channel testing later.
Iconic Cat 6 sockets support 1 Gigabit Ethernet across full-length permanent-link channels and 10 Gigabit Ethernet across shorter certified runs. They handle PoE, PoE+ and PoE++ where the upstream switch and patch panel also support those classes. For installations that need guaranteed 10G across the full 100 metre run, Cat 6A is the matching mechanism specification.
Future-proofing is largely about cable choice and outlet density. A Cat 6A outlet costs slightly more than a Cat 6 outlet today but supports the next generation of switches and access points. Adding a second outlet at each TV and study point is also far cheaper at rough-in than as a retrofit.
Structured cabling reduces downtime because every drop terminates at a known patch panel position. When a port fails, the patch lead moves to a spare port and the user is back online in minutes. Compare that with ad-hoc daisy-chained cabling, where a single fault can take a whole zone down and the source can take hours to find.
High-density outlet plates put four or more network mechanisms in one location, which suits AV racks, comms cupboards and shared workstations. The 4, 5 and 6 gang grids in the Iconic range carry mixed combinations of RJ45, F-type and HDMI, all under matching skins.
Saturn and Excel are earlier premium Clipsal ranges. Saturn uses a glass and metal cover with a touch-style aesthetic. Excel uses a screwless plate. Iconic sits between them on price and offers the broadest current network mechanism range. Saturn and Excel mechanisms are not interchangeable with Iconic grids.
Legrand Arteor and PDL Pro Series both offer comparable modular network ranges. The choice often comes down to existing site stock and electrician familiarity. Sparky Direct stocks Legrand and PDL alongside Clipsal so installers can match a building's existing system rather than mixing brands within one room.
Wall-mounted network and HDMI modules are good for short runs to a TV or projector. For long HDMI runs over 5 metres, dedicated HDMI baluns over Cat 6 give better signal stability than passive HDMI extension. The TV supplies hub category lists the active AV products for those longer runs.
Specify Iconic when the site already uses Iconic light switches and power points. It also suits projects where matching skin colours across power and data is important, or where the client wants Wiser smart-home integration in the same wall plate. For pure data-only retrofits in a non-Clipsal building, a like-for-like replacement using the existing brand may be more practical.
Residential applications include hard-wired TV and AV points, study and home-office data drops, network access points (often PoE), and Wiser smart-home control. A typical four-bedroom home uses 8 to 12 Cat 6 outlets distributed across living areas and bedrooms.
Commercial fitouts use Iconic at quiet rooms, hot desks and meeting room AV walls. Two RJ45 outlets per workstation is a common standard, with one feeding the desk and one acting as a spare. Wall-mounted HDMI sockets feed wall-flush displays in meeting rooms.
Education, healthcare and government projects often specify Cat 6A for future 10G capacity, and they use higher-density wall plates at AV walls, nurse stations and reception counters. Compliance documentation and certified test results are usually mandatory deliverables on these projects.
Hospitality and retail use Iconic at front-of-house POS points, back-of-house data closets and guest-room TV walls. The matching skin colours let the network outlets blend into the interior design rather than standing out as utility hardware.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) requires that anyone performing fixed cabling that connects to the public telecommunications network holds a current Cabler Registration. This includes most fixed RJ45 and RJ12 cabling work in homes and businesses. Sparky Direct sells the parts; the cabling work itself must be done by a registered cabler.
AS/CA S008 sets the wiring rules for customer cabling. AS/CA S009 sets the installation requirements for telecommunications customer cabling. Both standards apply to RJ45 and RJ12 outlet installations, and both are referenced in the ACMA cabling provider rules.
240V power cabling and telecommunications data cabling must maintain physical separation to limit electromagnetic interference and manage fault-current risk. The exact distances depend on whether the cables share a tray, conduit or wall cavity. As a general rule, separate runs by at least 50mm where they run parallel for any distance, and cross at right angles where they must meet. Iconic grids that combine power and data on one plate use internal separation between the two mechanism positions.
On commissioning, every data outlet should be channel-tested against the relevant Cat 6 or Cat 6A specification with a certified tester. Test reports are usually a contractual deliverable. The cabler must also issue a Telecommunications Cabling Advice (TCA1) form for the installation.
Iconic network mechanism prices vary by type and finish. Single Cat 6 RJ45 mechanisms generally sit in the lower price band, while HDMI and combined adaptor mechanisms sit higher. Grids and skins are priced separately. Sparky Direct lists current pricing on each product page within the Clipsal Iconic Network Connectivity category.
For new builds and larger fitouts, buying mechanisms in pack quantities reduces per-unit cost. For repairs and small upgrades, single-buy options keep stockholding low. Both options are listed on Sparky Direct so buyers can choose the right pack size for the job.
Counterfeit and parallel-import network mechanisms appear on auction sites at very low prices. These often fail Cat 6 certification testing and may not carry valid Australian compliance markings. Buying from an authorised wholesaler protects the installer from rework and certification disputes.
Local trade counters offer same-day pickup but limited stock breadth. Online wholesalers like Sparky Direct hold a wider product range with next-day delivery to most metro areas. Many tradies use both: counter for emergency stock, online for planned jobs.
Sparky Direct ships nationally with most metro orders arriving the next business day. Stock levels for the Iconic network range are visible on each product page so buyers can plan around lead time.
Start with the structured cabling design: how many outlets, of what type, at what density. Then select Iconic mechanisms that match (RJ45 Cat 6 or Cat 6A, RJ12, HDMI, F-type or PAL). Match grid sizes to the mechanism count, and select skins to suit the interior palette. Buying parts in this order avoids mismatched stock arriving on site.
Plan for at least one spare outlet at every active location. Doubling up at TV walls, study desks and AV cabinets costs little extra at rough-in and removes the need for retrofit work later. The cable cost per drop is far lower than the labour cost of opening walls a second time.
Common mistakes include ordering Cat 6 mechanisms when the structured cabling is actually Cat 6A, ordering grids that do not match the mechanism count, and assuming all skin colours are stocked across all grid sizes. Reading the spec sheet before ordering avoids most of these.
Sparky Direct stocks the Iconic network range alongside the wider Iconic switch and power point family. Buyers can browse by mechanism type, finish or pack size, and orders ship from Australian stock. For specification questions, the Sparky Direct trade desk can confirm compatibility with existing Iconic hardware on site.
