The Nesco STL-5 is a fused low voltage test lamp rated for 240V and 415V mains testing, categorised CAT IV 450V. The STL-5 gives a visual indication only: the lamp illuminates when voltage is present and stays dark when the circuit is dead. It is supplied as a complete set of leads and probes, ready to use straight out of the pouch.
Proving dead is the step in an isolation procedure that carries the most consequence. Instrumentation that depends on batteries or a display can fail silently between verification checks. The STL-5 indicates on the supply voltage itself, so there is no calibration interval and no screen interpretation. The fused 240/415V design and CAT IV 450V category rating suit overhead lines, underground pillars and pits, and low voltage switchboards.
Australian electricians keep a set of test lamps in the vehicle because they survive decades of jobsite handling. The STL-5 presents a low impedance load to the conductors under test. Capacitively induced voltage on a de-energised circuit will not illuminate it, where a high impedance multimeter can display a false indication. Apprentices become competent with it in minutes, which explains its continuing presence in TAFE workshops. A single set covers both 240V and 415V distribution systems.
The STL-5 is not a measuring instrument and gives no numeric voltage, current or resistance reading. It is rated for low voltage systems up to 450V CAT IV and must not be applied to high voltage apparatus. Use on extra-low voltage control and data circuits will not produce a meaningful indication.

(STL-5)
CAT IV 450V means the test lamp is rated for use at the origin of a low voltage installation, including service entrances, meter panels and outdoor supply points, where prospective fault energy is highest. It covers testing up to 450V in that category.
Prove the lamp on a known live source first, apply the probes to the isolated conductors, then prove the lamp on the known live source again. The lamp lighting indicates voltage is present. No illumination after a valid prove-test indicates the circuit is dead.
No batteries are required. The lamp draws its indication energy from the circuit under test, so there is nothing to charge or replace. That also means the lamp cannot indicate on a de-energised circuit, which is why proving on a known live source before and after each test is essential.
Both are covered. The lamp is rated for 240V and 415V, so it suits single phase circuits and phase to phase checks on three phase submains, motors and starters. No range selection or switching is needed between the two.
A test lamp loads the circuit, so induced or ghost voltage on a de-energised conductor does not produce a false indication the way it can on a high impedance meter. A multimeter is still needed where an actual voltage value must be recorded.
Warranty runs one year for domestic use and one year for commercial use, starting from the invoice date. The warranty method is return to Sparky Direct. Warranties are void where a product requiring installation has not been installed by a licensed electrician.
The set is supplied complete and ready to use, with colour coded leads in white, black and red and an integral fuse in the lead assembly. Nothing further needs to be purchased before testing begins.
The Nesco STL-5 is available online from Sparky Direct, with Australia-wide delivery to any state or territory including regional areas. Sparky Direct is an Australian electrical wholesaler established in 2005, supplying more than 500,000 customers with transparent trade pricing.
