The A Digital Life SP65WBS is a pair of 6.5 inch in-ceiling speakers with WiFi and Bluetooth streaming built in, rated 2 x 30W into 8 ohms. The SP65WBS set combines one active master speaker, which carries the amplifier and the wireless module, with one passive speaker wired from the master's speaker output. Both speakers use a polypropylene cone woofer and a 0.75 inch pivoting silk dome tweeter, and both drop into a 209mm ceiling cutout. The set is RoHS certified and runs from a DC 24V/2.5A adapter supplied with the active speaker.
Standard ceiling audio means finding a serviceable spot for an amplifier, then running dedicated speaker cable back to it from every zone. The SP65WBS removes that step, because the amplifier and wireless module are integrated into the active speaker. Each pair needs only a 209mm cutout and a power outlet in the ceiling cavity. Retrofits into finished plasterboard are simpler again, since the dog leg fixings engage from the front face with no access required above the sheet.
For an installer, the SP65WBS is a two-speaker, single-outlet installation rather than a distributed audio design job. There is no amplifier rack to specify and no volume plate to coordinate, and the customer sets their own zones in the app. The grill is magnetic and paintable, so it fits off last and matches the ceiling finish without a return visit. On a renovation or a compact commercial fit-out, a pair per room is a straightforward addition to a lighting quote, and up to eight pairs operate on a single network.
The SP65WBS is not rated for wet or damp locations, and no IP rating is published for it, so bathrooms, laundries and exposed eaves are out. Each speaker needs a 209mm cutout with 100mm of clear mounting depth behind the sheet, so shallow bulkheads and ceilings congested with services will not take it. The active speaker also needs a 24V DC adapter within reach, so a ceiling space with no accessible power point will not suit.
(SP65WBS)
The SP65WBS needs a 209mm cutout and 100mm of mounting depth behind the sheet. Trace the supplied template, drill a pilot hole, then cut the circle with a cutting saw. Adjust the dog legs with the supplied installation tool, push the speaker into the hole, and press the buttons on the front face to lock the legs.
The active master speaker runs from a DC 24V/2.5A adapter supplied in the box, so it needs an accessible power outlet in or near the ceiling space. The passive speaker draws no power of its own and wires back to the speaker output on the active unit. Installing a new outlet is licensed electrical work.
The Smart Sonix app controls the SP65WBS and is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. It handles setup, zone grouping, source switching and streaming service selection. Apple devices on the same network can also stream to the active speaker using AirPlay.
The active speaker carries the amplifier, the WiFi and Bluetooth module, the RCA jack, the Ethernet port and the power inlet. The passive speaker carries the drivers only and connects to the active speaker's output. Slide the mono/stereo switch on the active unit to the stereo position once the passive speaker is wired in.
One to eight pairs run on a single network. Group them into zones in the Smart Sonix app, selecting the bottom speaker first and working up the list. The circled LR tab sets which speaker plays the left channel and which plays the right.
No IP rating is published for the SP65WBS, so it is suitable for dry interior ceilings only. Bathrooms, laundries, eaves and any position exposed to moisture sit outside its scope. Check the ceiling structure's load-bearing capacity before cutting, and avoid wiring or plumbing behind the surface.
The active speaker ships with a user manual, a cutout template, a grill, a power cord with adapter and an installation tool. The passive speaker ships with its own grill. Paint and a spray gun are not included, so the grills need painting on site if they are to match the ceiling colour.
