The Multi-Contact PV branch connectors, also known as MC4 connectors, are efficient and cost-effective devices used for connecting two parallel strings of solar panels. These connectors are rated IP68, ensuring a safe and reliable connection. By using MC4 connectors, the need to run two separate cables over a long distance from the far end of the PV array is eliminated, saving both time and money. The second generation of MC4 connectors, manufactured by Multi-Contact (currently Stäubli Electrical Connectors), has gained worldwide acceptance and popularity. These connectors are designed to accommodate 4-6mm2 solar cables and utilize the proven MC Multilam technology, offering high long-term stability.
To comply with Australian Standards AS5033, it is essential to use genuine MC4 socket connectors, as stated in Clause 4.3.7, which requires connectors to be matched only with connectors of the same type from the same manufacturer. MC4 connectors are single-contact electrical connectors specifically designed for solar panel connections. The acronym "MC" stands for Multi-Contact, the manufacturer, and the "4" represents the 4-mm diameter contact pin. MC4 connectors enable easy construction of panel strings by manually pushing the connectors together. However, a tool is necessary to disconnect them to prevent accidental disconnection when the cables are pulled.
Since around 2011, MC4 connectors and compatible products have become universally used in the solar market, equipping the majority of solar panels manufactured. The MC4 system comprises both plug and socket components. Interestingly, the plugs and sockets are housed in plastic shells that appear to have the opposite gender. The plug, located inside a cylindrical shell resembling a female connector, is referred to as male, while the socket, housed in a square probe that appears male, is actually electrically female. The female connector features two plastic fingers that need to be slightly pressed toward the central probe to fit into holes on the front of the male connector.
When the connectors are pushed together, the fingers slide down the holes until they reach a notch on the side of the male connector, where they lock the two connectors securely. To ensure a proper seal, MC4 connectors require the use of cables with the correct diameter. Typically, these cables are double-insulated (insulation plus black sheath) and UV resistant, as outdoor use without protection from sunlight can cause cable deterioration. Connection is achieved through a special crimping tool or soldering.
