Learn more by watching our Fluke 117: The Ultimate Electricians Multimeter video.
The Fluke 117 is a compact True-RMS digital multimeter rated CAT III 600 V, built for electricians working on commercial and residential installations. The 117 measures AC and DC voltage, resistance, continuity, frequency, and capacitance, and captures minimum, maximum, and average readings over time. It carries integrated non-contact voltage detection and an automatic AC/DC voltage selector, paired with a 6,000-count backlit display. The meter ships with a TL75 test lead set, a protective holster, and a user manual.
Fault finding on a live site means confirming a conductor is dead before work starts, often with a separate volt stick in hand. Ghost voltage on long cable runs can throw a false reading and send a sparky chasing a fault that is not there. The Fluke 117 answers both with integrated non-contact voltage detection and a selectable low-impedance mode that drops phantom voltage from the reading. Accurate measurement across both low-voltage and extra-low-voltage work keeps one meter on the tools instead of two.
For a sparky on the job, the 117 covers the daily round from one tool: voltage, continuity, resistance, frequency, and capacitance. AutoVolt sets AC or DC for you, so the reading appears without switching ranges between tests. The 6,000-count backlit display stays readable in a dark switchboard, and the min, max, and average capture flags intermittent faults a single reading would miss. A true-RMS movement reports accurate figures on the distorted waveforms common on circuits with electronic loads.
The Fluke 117 is rated for CAT III 600 V and is not suitable for CAT IV service-entrance work or for measuring circuits above 600 V. It carries an IP42 housing, so it is not weatherproof and must be kept out of rain, submersion, and heavy wash-down areas.
Verified Sparky Direct customer reviews: Fluke 117 Compact Digital Multimeter (FLUKE117)
"Adaptable Training tool accurate and suitable for both LV and ELV including Capacitors" — Graeme
"Absolutely love this meter as a small unit" — Don
"Everything you need all in a quality meter" — Gary
(FLUKE117)
The Fluke 117 is rated CAT III 600 V to IEC 61010, which covers measurements on fixed installations and distribution wiring up to 600 V. It is not rated for CAT IV service-entrance work or for circuits above 600 V.
The Fluke 117 measures AC and DC voltage, resistance, continuity, frequency, and capacitance, plus AC and DC current to 10 A through a fused input, down to a 1 milliamp resolution. It also captures minimum, maximum, and average readings to help track values that change over time.
Built-in VoltAlert technology senses voltage near a conductor and signals a go/no-go result without contact. It gives a fast live check before the test leads come out, which removes the need to carry a separate volt stick for that first look.
The Fluke 115 and 117 share the same core measurements, but the 117 adds three features aimed at electricians: integrated non-contact voltage detection, a selectable low-impedance mode that rejects ghost voltage, and automatic AC/DC voltage selection. The 115 is pitched at general field service.
The Fluke 117 suits users who want a meter with a large display and a broad set of measurement functions. The Fluke 175 is the stronger choice where a higher voltage rating and better accuracy matter: it is rated to 1000 V AC/DC against 600 V on the 117, and offers 0.15% basic DC accuracy against 0.5%.
The meter runs on a single 9 V alkaline battery (IEC 6LR61) and gives about 400 hours of typical use without the backlight. A low-battery indicator appears on the display when the cell needs changing.
The kit includes the meter, a TL75 test lead set, a protective holster, and a user manual. The TL75 leads and holster let you start testing straight away without buying extra accessories.
