Additional related video.
The Clipsal Iconic 40MI is an intermediate switch mechanism rated 10A 250V for multi-way lighting control from three or more points. The 40MI is supplied as a mechanism only and clips into a Clipsal Iconic grid, ready to take a cover skin to complete the switch. The rocker action carries a 10AX rating for lighting loads and suits residential and commercial multi-way switching.
Switching a single light from three or more points requires an intermediate mechanism wired between a pair of two-way switches. Extended hallways, stairwells across multiple storeys, and open-plan rooms with several entries all require this multi-way switching arrangement. The 40MI is positioned at the centre of the wiring run and manages the crossover, so the light operates from every switch point. It fits the standard Clipsal Iconic grid, so the mechanism drops into the rest of the installation without extra parts.
Licensed electricians carry the 40MI for stairwell and hallway jobs where a two-way pair cannot add the extra control point. Supplied as a mechanism-only unit, it installs into the same Iconic grid used across the job. It gangs onto a multi-gang plate wherever the layout calls for it. The clip-in fixing allows a rapid fit-off with no separate backing hardware, and the crossover conductors terminate on screw terminals that take 1.5mm to 4mm cable. Stock management stays straightforward because one grid system covers single mechanisms through to full multi-gang plates.
The 40MI is an interior mechanism and is not rated for weatherproof, outdoor, or damp exposed locations. It should not be installed in wet areas or anywhere subject to splash, and it is a lighting-circuit switch rather than a power outlet. On its own the 40MI does not form a working switch and needs a grid and cover skin to complete the installation.

An intermediate switch adds control points to a circuit that already runs between two two-way switches. A two-way switch controls a light from two locations, while the intermediate switch sits between that pair and adds a third or further switching point on the same light.
The Clipsal Iconic 40MI clips into the standard Clipsal Iconic grid and takes the same Iconic cover skins used across the range. It can be ganged with other Iconic mechanisms on a multi-gang plate, so one grid layout can carry switches, outlets, and the intermediate mechanism together.
A complete installation needs the mechanism plus a Clipsal Iconic grid and a cover skin, which are supplied separately. The grid holds the mechanism in the wall and the skin provides the finished face. The circuit also needs two two-way switches at the other control points for multi-way switching.
Installation of the 40MI must be carried out by a licensed electrician. The mechanism clips into an Iconic grid and the crossover wiring lands on screw terminals sized for 1.5mm to 4mm conductors. Wiring an intermediate switch into a multi-way lighting circuit is not a DIY task.
The 40MI is rated 10A at 250V, with a 10AX rating for tungsten and general lighting loads. That covers standard residential and commercial lighting circuits. The mechanism switches lighting loads and is not intended as a power outlet or high-current switching device.
An intermediate switch mechanism of this type is for dry interior use only. It is not rated for weatherproof, outdoor, or damp exposed locations, and should not be installed in wet areas or anywhere subject to splash. Interior lighting circuits in dry locations are the intended application.
