Klein Tools | Scout Pro 3 Cable Tester VDV501-852 610m Length Measurement | 36 Locator Remotes Included

The Klein Tools VDV501-852 is a cable tester kit for voice (RJ11/RJ12), data (RJ45), and coaxial (F-connector) runs, measuring cable length to 610 metres. The VDV501-852 pairs the Scout Pro 3 tester with 18 RJ45 LAN locator remotes and 18 F-coax locator remotes in a carrying case. It detects, identifies, and tests Power over Ethernet, showing PoE voltage and A/B wiring on a backlit LCD.

Diagnosing an unlabelled data run means guessing which cable at the patch panel lands at which wall plate. The VDV501-852 kit carries 36 numbered locator remotes, so a full floor of outlets is identified in a single pass. Length measurement to 610 metres indicates where a break sits on a faulty pair, rather than condemning the entire installation. Open, short, miswire, and split-pair detection covers the termination faults common on structured cabling.

Communications cabling now sits alongside power work, and the Scout Pro 3 verifies voice, data, and coaxial runs from one instrument. The self-storing Test + Map remote tests, maps, and identifies a run in a single step, so nobody returns to the far end to move a remote. Hub blink mode flashes the matching switch port, avoiding a manual trace of patch leads through a crowded rack. Adapters, jumper cables, and a 9V battery arrive in the carrying case, so the kit is ready for work immediately.

        Features

        • Voice, data, and coax testing — tests RJ11 4-wire, RJ12 6-wire, RJ45 8-wire, and F-connector terminated coaxial cables from one handset.
        • Cable length measurement — measures runs up to 610 metres and reports length on the LCD for each tested pair.
        • Power over Ethernet testing — detects and identifies PoE, displaying the voltage and the A or B wiring scheme in use.
        • 36 locator remotes supplied — the VDV501-852 includes 18 RJ45 LAN locator remotes and 18 F-coax locator remotes for identifying multiple outlets at once.
        • Self-storing Test + Map remote — remote number 1 stows in the tester body and tests, maps, and IDs a cable run in one step.
        • Fault detection — reports open, short, miswire, and split-pair conditions on the wiremap display.
        • TIA-568A/B and crossover pass — confirms the run terminates to a standard pinout rather than only proving continuity end to end.
        • Hub blink mode — flashes the LED on a hub or switch port so the connected port is identified without pulling patch leads out.
        • Backlit LCD — displays cable length, wiremap, cable ID, and test results in dark ceiling spaces and unlit comms cupboards.
        • Multiple style tone generator — five tone styles for tracing pairs and individual conductors, used with an analogue tracing probe sold separately.
        • 9V alkaline battery supplied — the VDV501-852 ships with the battery, and replacement cells are a standard hardware item.
        • 2 metre drop rating — the overmoulded housing is rated for a drop of 2 metres, which suits a tester that lives in a work bag.
        • No ingress protection — rated IP00, so the VDV501-852 is for dry indoor testing and is not built for wet or dusty positions.

        Where to use

        • New data cabling installs — the VDV501-852 proves each RJ45 run to TIA-568A/B before the plates go on and the rack is dressed off.
        • Unmarked outlet identification — 18 RJ45 locator remotes label a floor of unmarked wall plates back to the patch panel in a single pass.
        • Coax and TV distribution work — 18 F-coax locator remotes identify F-connector runs feeding TV outlets and antenna splitters.
        • PoE device commissioning — confirms voltage and pair wiring at the outlet before a camera, access point, or IP phone is plugged in.
        • Fault finding on failed runs — the VDV501-852 measures pairs individually, so a break can be narrowed down along the cable instead of replacing the lot.
        • Comms cupboards and racks — hub blink mode identifies the switch port serving an outlet without disturbing live patching around it.
        • Residential prewire and smart home rough-in — checks data and coax drops at frame stage while the cabling is still accessible.
        • Service and maintenance calls — the carrying case keeps adapters, jumper cables, and remotes together for a quick fault call.

The Klein Tools VDV501-852 is a test and identification tool rather than a certification tester, so it does not produce category performance reports for a cabling standard. It is rated IP00 with no ingress protection and should not be used in wet, dusty, or exposed outdoor positions. The kit covers voice, data, and coaxial cabling and is not a mains test instrument.

Verified Sparky Direct customer reviews: Klein Tools VDV501-852 | Scout Pro 3 Tester with Locator Remote Kit (VDV501-852)

"A great tool, easy to use" — Mitch

"The Scout Pro 3 is excellent value for money." — Chris

"Great quality network tools with all the features and extras needed" — Phil

        (VDV501-852)

The VDV501-852 kit contains the Scout Pro 3 tester, a self-storing Test + Map remote, 18 RJ45 LAN locator remotes, and 18 F-coax locator remotes. Also supplied are two coax barrel adapters, RJ45, RJ11, and RJ12 jumper cables, a carrying case, and a 9V battery.

The Scout Pro 3 tests RJ11 4-wire and RJ12 6-wire voice cabling, RJ45 8-wire data cabling, and F-connector terminated coaxial runs. Jumper cables for each connector type are supplied in the kit.

Hub blink mode drives the port LED on a hub or switch so that it flashes. That shows which port serves the outlet under test, without unplugging patch leads to trace the run by hand.

Length measurement runs to 610 metres. Measuring pairs individually helps narrow down where a break sits on a faulty run, rather than replacing a whole cable that may be sound for most of its length.

The tone generator offers five tone styles, and an analogue tone tracing probe is needed to follow that tone along a run. The probe is sold separately. Klein Tools lists the Probe-PRO VDV500-123 for this purpose.

The Scout Pro 3 reports open circuits, shorts, miswires, and split pairs, and shows the result on the wiremap display. Faults are reported per pair, so the affected conductors are identified rather than the run simply failing as a whole.

Warranty runs for one year for domestic use and one year for commercial use, starting from the invoice date. Claims are handled by return to Sparky Direct.

The Scout Pro 3 does not certify bandwidth or category performance, so it will not produce a Cat6 or Cat6A test report. It confirms wiremap, cable length, PoE, and termination faults instead.
