        Major Tech | Day/Night Sensor 10A 220-240V AC | IP65 Weatherproof

The Major Tech DNS11 is a compact day/night sensor rated 10A at 220 to 240V AC, switching a lighting circuit on at dusk and off again at dawn. The DNS11 reads ambient light through a photocell and holds an adjustable switching threshold between 5 and 50 lux. It carries an IP65 rating for exposed outdoor positions and is built to IEC 60669-1 and AS/NZS 60669.1.

Exterior lighting left on a manual switch either burns all night or gets forgotten until someone walks an unlit site after dark. A photocell removes that decision from the occupant: the contacts close when illumination drops and reopen at first light. The adjustable 5 to 50 lux threshold sets the switching point for a shaded courtyard or an exposed commercial car park. An IP65 enclosure keeps rain and dust off the sensing element in unsheltered installations.

Photocells sit at the cheap end of a lighting quotation, so contractors typically carry several on the truck for maintenance callbacks. The DNS11 opens on two base screws and takes the supply through a single compression gland, which keeps the installation to minutes on a wall or pole. The 10A rated current covers most LED, CFL and incandescent circuits without an intermediate contactor. Stock stays simple as well, because one part number covers domestic, commercial and industrial exterior lighting.

        Features

        • Automatic dusk to dawn switching — the DNS11 closes the lighting circuit as ambient light falls and opens it again once daylight returns.
        • Adjustable lux knob — the switching threshold sets anywhere between 5 and 50 lux, so the lights come on early on a dull site or late on a bright one.
        • 10A rated current — carries LED, CFL and incandescent lighting loads up to 10 amps on a single circuit.
        • 220 to 240V AC supply — runs on standard Australian mains at 50 or 60Hz with no separate control transformer.
        • IP65 rated enclosure — sealed against dust ingress and low pressure water jets for mounting in fully exposed positions.
        • Surface mounting — the DNS11 fixes to a wall or a pole using the supplied fixing screws.
        • Gland cable entry — the supply passes through a compression gland in the base, keeping the entry sealed at the cable.
        • Two-screw base access — loosening two screws releases the gland and cover for wiring, then the same two screws close it back up.
        • Wide operating temperature — rated from minus 20 to plus 40 degrees Celsius, covering Australian outdoor extremes.
        • Humidity rating — operates in relative humidity below 93 per cent, suiting coastal and subtropical installs.
        • Light-level switching only — the DNS11 responds to ambient light, not to movement, so it holds the load on all night rather than switching on occupancy.
        • Standards compliance — built to IEC 60669-1, IEC 60669-2-1, AS/NZS 60669.1 and AS/NZS 60669.2.1.

        Where to use

        • Driveway and entry lighting — the DNS11 brings the front of a property up at dusk without anyone touching a switch on the way in.
        • Car parks and yards — controls flood and area lighting across a commercial site from one photocell on an exposed wall.
        • Warehouse and factory exteriors — switches loading dock and perimeter lighting through the night on industrial sites.
        • Street and access road lighting — mounts to a pole to run roadway and access lighting on ambient light alone.
        • Garden and pathway circuits — the DNS11 suits low wattage LED path and garden fittings that would otherwise sit on a timer.
        • Farm sheds and rural buildings — keeps yard lighting running from dusk on properties where the sheds sit well away from the house.

The DNS11 must not be installed directly beneath the light fixture it controls, or anywhere the controlled fitting shines onto the photocell, because the sensor will cycle. Keep the detection window clear: obstructions and swaying objects in front of the photocell affect the reading. The unit is not rated for submersion, and it is not a motion sensor, so it will not switch on occupancy.

        (DNS11)

The DNS11 is built to IEC 60669-1 and IEC 60669-2-1, along with the Australian and New Zealand equivalents AS/NZS 60669.1 and AS/NZS 60669.2.1. These standards cover switches for household and similar fixed electrical installations, including automatic control switches.

Installation must be carried out by a licensed electrician. The sensor mounts to a wall or a pole with the supplied fixing screws, with the supply run through the gland in the base. Do not mount it directly beneath the light fitting it controls, or the sensor will cycle.

The rated current is 10A at 220 to 240V AC, which covers LED, CFL and incandescent lighting circuits up to that limit. For larger arrays, run the sensor into a contactor and let the contactor carry the lamp load rather than exceeding the 10A contact rating.

Turn the lux knob on the sensor body. The moon position switches the load on when ambient light drops below about 5 lux, and the sun position brings it on at around 50 lux. To bench test in daylight, cover the detection window with a black opaque cloth.

The working range is minus 20 to plus 40 degrees Celsius at relative humidity below 93 per cent, and the IP65 enclosure keeps out dust and low pressure water jets. IP65 is not a submersion rating, so avoid positions that flood or sit under running water.

The Major Tech DNS11 is available online from Sparky Direct, with Australia-wide delivery to any state or territory including regional areas. Sparky Direct is an Australian electrical wholesaler established in 2005, supplying more than 500,000 customers with transparent trade pricing.

A day/night sensor switches on ambient light level and holds the load on all night. A PIR switches on movement and times out. For occupancy switching on a wall, Major Tech offers the PIR49 240 degree IP65 motion sensor instead.
