The Major Tech MT948 is a thermo anemometer that measures air velocity, air flow volume, and air temperature through a 70mm remote vane probe. Air velocity reads from 0.40 to 30.00m/s at ±(3%+0.20m/s), with km/h, ft/min, mph, and knots also selectable. Entering a duct area up to 999.9m² lets the MT948 calculate air flow directly in CMM or CFM. A built-in NTC thermistor in the vane reads air temperature from -10°C to 60°C on the backlit dual LCD.
Balancing an air conditioning system means proving each outlet delivers its design air flow, not guessing from a hand held near the grille. Reading velocity alone still leaves the arithmetic, and juggling a calculator between registers slows a balance report to a crawl. The MT948 takes the duct area once and converts velocity straight to CMM or CFM, with 16 memory locations holding eight areas each for CFM and CMM work. Because the vane sits on a lead, one operator holds the sensor in the air stream and reads the meter at the same time.
An AC tech proving a split system can read supply air temperature and outlet velocity on the same screen, with no second instrument on the ladder. The 20-point averaging mode smooths turbulent duct readings into a single stable figure for the commissioning sheet. MAX, MIN, and average recording runs while the vane traverses a register, so the spread across the face is captured in one pass. A rubber protective jacket and an 80 hour battery life from one 9V keep the MT948 working through a full week of site visits.
The MT948 instrument operates within 0°C to 50°C at below 80% relative humidity and to a maximum altitude of 2000 metres. It carries no ingress protection rating, so keep the meter and vane out of rain, condensation, and wet plant areas. The measurement span for air temperature extends to -10°C, but the meter body itself must stay within its 0°C operating floor.

Air velocity from 0.40 to 30.00m/s, air flow volume in CMM or CFM once a duct area is entered, and air temperature from -10°C to 60°C. Velocity also displays in km/h, ft/min, mph, and knots, and the backlit LCD shows the air reading and temperature together.
Enter the duct or outlet area in m² or ft² using the AREA mode, and the meter multiplies measured velocity into cubic metres or cubic feet per minute. Sixteen memory locations, eight each for CFM and CMM, store commonly used areas so repeat sites need no re-entry.
Air velocity is rated ±(3%+0.20m/s) across 0.40 to 30.00m/s with 0.01m/s resolution, and air temperature is rated ±2.0°C with 0.1°C resolution. The meter samples about one reading per second and ships fully tested and calibrated.
Turbulent air streams jump around too much for a single spot reading, so averaging mode collects up to 20 readings and reports one stable figure. It works in both velocity and flow modes, and the previous average can be recalled with a single press of the AVG button.
The vane plugs into a keyed sensor jack on top of the meter, fitting one way only. Air must enter the vane in the direction of the arrow sticker inside it, and if the vane is disconnected or faulty the display shows OL instead of a temperature.
One 9V battery, accessed by removing the rubber protective jacket and a Phillips screw on the rear compartment. Battery life is around 80 hours, though continuous backlight use shortens it significantly, and the meter powers itself off after 20 minutes unless that feature is disabled.
