Engraving is offered on a defined list of socket outlets rather than the full power point range. The list is deliberately narrow because each plate has to be jig mounted and marked to a repeatable depth. Every outlet on the list is a 10 amp double GPO, and each one is available in the standard white finish supplied by its manufacturer.
The range grows as demand appears. Electricians who need a different body, colour or current rating can put the outlet forward for assessment, and the process for doing that is set out in the request section further down this page.
Labelling matters most where an outlet is not obviously connected to the thing it feeds. A GPO behind a fridge needs no explanation. A GPO on a generator changeover circuit, a UPS spur or a landlord supply does, and a printed label will not last.
Server rooms, workshops and plant rooms often carry several supplies in the same space. Marking each outlet with its circuit number or supply type lets the next tradesperson identify the source without opening the board. Engraved text also survives the solvents and detergents used in commercial cleaning.
Sites with a generator or an uninterruptible supply usually distinguish those outlets by colour, but colour alone does not say which load is protected. Text such as ESSENTIAL SUPPLY or UPS ONLY removes the guesswork and discourages staff from plugging general equipment into a reserved circuit.
Landlords and short stay hosts use engraved outlets to mark supplies that belong to the property rather than the occupant. Common examples include outlets reserved for a pool pump, an irrigation controller or a common area supply. Guests can also be pointed to a marked outlet for charging, which reduces the number of appliances run from a single point.
Halls, clubs, schools and hire venues get asked the same questions every booking. An outlet marked PA SYSTEM or STAGE LIGHTING ONLY answers the question at the wall. The marking also helps volunteers who rotate through the venue and have no history with the building.
An engraved plate identifies an outlet. It does not change the rating, the wiring or the protection behind it. Any change to the load an outlet serves remains a job for a licensed electrician working to the current wiring rules.
The engraved area on a double GPO plate is small, so wording has to be planned rather than pasted in. Short, upper case text reads best from standing height, and abbreviations that are already common on site work better than full sentences.
Longer text has to be set at a smaller size, and very small characters lose contrast on a white plate. Two short lines usually read better than one long line. Symbols, logos and mixed case text can be discussed, though legibility should decide the final layout rather than appearance alone.
Check the wording twice: engraving is permanent and each plate is marked to order, so the text supplied is the text delivered. Confirming spelling, circuit numbers and abbreviations before the order is placed avoids a return trip to site.
AS/NZS 3000 requires that electrical equipment be identified where identification is needed for safe operation and maintenance. The standard sets the obligation but does not prescribe engraved plates, so any durable and legible method is acceptable. Engraving simply meets the durability part of that test better than adhesive labels do.
Outlets fed from a non standard supply are the usual case. This includes generator and changeover circuits, uninterruptible supplies, extra low voltage systems and outlets reserved for a specific appliance where accidental use could create a hazard. Isolation points and outlets serving safety services also fall into this group.
Switchboard schedules, circuit charts and warning notices remain separate requirements. An engraved outlet complements those records at the point of use. It is not a substitute for the board documentation, and it does not remove the need for correct testing and verification at handover.
Where a site has specific labelling requirements written into a specification, the wording should be taken from that document rather than invented on site. Sparky Direct engraves the text supplied, so the responsibility for matching a specification sits with the person placing the order.
Two of the engraved options serve different jobs. A complete outlet arrives as a working GPO ready to wire in. A cover skin is the front plate on its own, designed to clip onto a Clipsal Iconic outlet that is already installed.
| Consideration | Complete engraved outlet | Engraved cover skin |
|---|---|---|
| What is supplied | Mechanism, grid and engraved plate | Engraved plate only |
| Typical use | New installation or full replacement | Adding identification to an existing outlet |
| Ranges available | Clipsal Classic, Clipsal Iconic, NLS Classic | Clipsal Iconic |
| Work required | Wiring by a licensed electrician | Plate swap with the supply isolated |
| Downtime on site | Circuit isolated for the full replacement | Brief isolation while the plate is changed |
The skin option suits buildings already fitted out in Iconic, because identification can be added later without touching the wiring. Sparky Direct also stocks unengraved power point covers, including the Iconic Essence skin covers and the Iconic Styl skin plate covers, for sites that want a colour change without marking.
All three engravable ranges are 10 amp double outlets that mount to standard Australian fixing centres. The differences sit in the plate design, the way the cover attaches and the buildings each range tends to suit.
Classic has been installed across Australian homes for decades, which makes it the practical choice when a single outlet in an existing house needs replacing. A Classic engraved plate will sit beside the existing outlets without looking out of place. The range is part of the wider Clipsal catalogue.
Iconic uses a separate grid and clip on cover, which is what makes the skin only engraving option possible. The flat plate gives a larger and flatter engraving area than the older profiles. Iconic outlets pair with the matching Iconic switches and dimmers, and engraved Iconic dollies can carry matching text on the switch side of the room.
NLS Classic Style follows the familiar classic plate profile and is widely used on volume fit outs where a large number of identical outlets are needed. The range comes from National Light Sources.
Engraving is not yet offered on 15 amp power points, weatherproof GPO or surface sockets. Outlets from Hager, Legrand, HPM and PDL are stocked but not currently engraved. Requests covering any of these are welcome and are assessed individually.
An engraved outlet installs the same way as its unengraved equivalent. The engraving affects the face of the plate only, so fixing centres, mounting depth and termination arrangements are unchanged.
Three details decide whether an engraved outlet will work on site. The range needs to match the existing switchgear so the plate looks consistent. The wording needs to be final. The quantity needs to be confirmed, because each plate is marked to order and a later addition will be a separate run.
Plate orientation matters more with engraved outlets than with plain ones. Text is engraved to a set orientation, so an outlet mounted the other way up will read upside down. Confirming whether the outlet is horizontal or vertical before ordering prevents that outcome.
Recording the engraved wording against the circuit in the switchboard schedule keeps the two sets of documentation aligned. If an outlet is later replaced, the record makes it clear what the replacement plate needs to say.
Complete engraved outlets are wired in by a licensed electrician. Cover skins involve no wiring, though the supply still needs to be isolated before the plate is removed. Anyone unsure of the isolation requirements should engage a licensed electrician rather than attempt the swap.
The engravable list is not fixed. Sparky Direct expands it in response to what customers actually ask for, and suggestions from electricians carry real weight in that decision.
Requests go through the contact us page. Marking the enquiry as a Custom Engraving Request helps it reach the right team quickly. Each request is assessed for possibility and validity, which means checking whether the plate can be jig mounted and marked cleanly, and whether the finish will hold the engraving over time.
Not every request can be met. Some finishes do not take a clean mark, some plates cannot be held securely in a jig, and some outlets have too little flat area to carry legible text. Where a request cannot proceed, the reason is explained so an alternative range can be considered instead. General enquiries about the service can also be sent to support@sparkydirect.com.au.
The same engraving service extends beyond power points across the SD Premium range, so a site needing marked switches or tools as well can raise those in the one enquiry.

My partner and I have bought two big orders now from Sparky Direct and both times our packages arrived very quickly and we received all the correct items. Sparky direct have been a great company to go thought for any electrical needs. We love the Clipsal Iconic range! Looks so beautiful in our newly renovated home. Highly recommend.
Ordered gpo's and switch plate early on 29/11/19 and received notification early PM same day that all parts had been despatched to Aust Post. Excellent service. Orders always correct. Online ordering very easy and user friendly. Thanks to the staff at Sparky Direct.
They look fantastic. I replaced my 2 gang power points (also Clipsal Saturns - which I've installed in another room) for the 4 gang power points in my kitchen as I have more appliances than points. So I have 2 4 gang power points and they look great, match the light fittings and I'm very happy. I now have these throughout my home - all the light fittings and power points, they look stylish and I've had comments on them from several of my friends.

Shop Custom Power Point Engravings → Get Expert Advice →An engraved power point is a standard Australian socket outlet with text laser marked permanently into the face of the cover plate. The marking identifies the circuit, the load, the supply type or the owner of the outlet. Because the text is cut into the plastic rather than printed on it, it does not wear off.
Engraving is currently offered on three 10 amp double GPO ranges: Clipsal Classic in White Electric, Clipsal Iconic in Vivid White and NLS Classic Style in white. A Clipsal Iconic engraved cover skin is also available for retrofitting outlets already installed. Other outlets are assessed on a case by case basis.
The text is laser marked into the cover plate rather than printed on the surface, so it survives cleaning, sunlight and years of handling. Engraved plates also stand up to the solvents and detergents used in commercial cleaning, which is where adhesive and printed labels usually fail first.
Short upper case text reads best from standing height. Common examples include circuit identification such as CCT 14 or DB2 / C6, load markings such as FRIDGE ONLY or POOL PUMP, supply types such as ESSENTIAL SUPPLY or GENERATOR, and access markings such as STAFF USE ONLY.
The engraved area is small, so longer text has to be set at a smaller size and very small characters lose contrast on a white plate. Two short lines generally read better than one long line. Symbols, logos and mixed case text can be discussed, with legibility deciding the final layout.
No. Engraving is permanent and each plate is marked to order, so the text supplied is the text delivered. Spelling, circuit numbers and abbreviations should be confirmed before the order is placed, because a mistake means a replacement plate and a return trip to site.

Yes. Text is engraved to a set orientation, so an outlet mounted the other way up will read upside down. Whether the outlet is being installed horizontally or vertically needs to be confirmed before ordering, because each plate is marked to order and cannot be re-marked afterwards.

Those brands are stocked but are not currently part of the engraving range. Requests can be submitted for assessment, which covers whether the plate can be jig mounted and marked cleanly and whether the finish will hold the engraving. Where a request cannot proceed, the reason is explained.
