The Hager HMF280T is a two pole miniature circuit breaker rated 80A with a C tripping curve, built for DIN rail mounting on commercial and industrial boards. The HMF280T carries a 10kA short circuit breaking capacity and a rated operational voltage of 415V AC at 50/60Hz. Both poles are protected poles, so the breaker suits two active conductors rather than an active and switched neutral arrangement. It complies with AS/NZS 60898-1 and occupies three modules on the chassis.
Sizing a two pole breaker at 80A usually means the circuit is feeding something that matters: a submain, a two phase machine circuit, hot water plant or a charging installation. Get the curve wrong and the breaker nuisance trips on inrush every time the load starts. Get the fault level wrong and the board is not adequately protected at the point of installation. The HMF280T pairs a C curve magnetic trip at 5 to 10 times rated current with a 10kA breaking capacity, covering inrush from motor and transformer loads without giving up fault performance.
Switchboard builders and contractors value predictable module counts when laying out a chassis. The HMF280T occupies three modules, which lets the board be planned on paper before the gear arrives on site. Terminals accept 50mm² flexible or 70mm² rigid conductor, so the 80A tails land without a reducing lug or a mid-run joint. Hager also publishes side-by-side derating factors, which removes the guesswork when a bank of breakers sits shoulder to shoulder in a warm board.
The HMF280T provides overload and short circuit protection only. It does not provide earth leakage protection, so it does not satisfy any requirement for RCD protection on the circuit. The breaker is rated IP20 as supplied and must sit inside an enclosure or behind a board escutcheon rather than in an exposed position. Installation is restricted to a licensed electrician, and the 10kA rating needs verifying against the prospective fault current at the point of installation.
(HMF280T)
The HMF280T is manufactured to EN 60898-1, IEC 60947-2 and AS/NZS 60898-1. Its 10kA short circuit breaking capacity Icn is rated under AS/NZS 60898-1. Compliance of the completed switchboard remains the responsibility of the licensed electrician or switchboard builder.
A C curve breaker trips magnetically between 5 and 10 times its rated current, which on an 80A device is an instantaneous trip band of roughly 400A to 800A. That band lets motor, transformer and lighting inrush pass without nuisance tripping while still clearing a genuine fault.
The screw terminals accept flexible conductor up to 50mm² and rigid conductor up to 70mm². Nominal tightening torque is 3.6Nm at both the top and bottom terminals. Conductor sizing still needs to follow AS/NZS 3000 for the circuit current and the installation method.
The HMF280T has two protected poles and no concurrently switching neutral. Both poles carry overcurrent protection, which makes it suitable for two active conductors rather than an active plus switched neutral arrangement.
Sparky Direct stocks the HMF180T as the single pole 80A version and the HMF380T as the three pole 80A version, both 10kA C curve. The HMF190T and HMF390T cover 100A in single and three pole. Pole count follows the circuit configuration.
The HMF280T is a miniature circuit breaker providing overload and short circuit protection only. It has no residual current function, so any earth leakage protection required on the circuit has to come from a separate device. Device selection against AS/NZS 3000 is the installer's responsibility.
