Kyoritsu | Digital RCD ELCB Tester 10-500mA Auto Ramp | IP54 CAT III 300V

The Kyoritsu 5406A is a digital RCD (ELCB) tester rated for single-phase 230V AC operation, built to measure the trip time and trip current of residual current devices. The 5406A runs five test functions, including an auto ramp test, and checks Standard, Selective, Type AC and DC-sensitive Type A devices. It is built to IP54 and complies with IEC 61557 for installation testing.

Confirming that a residual current device trips inside the wiring-rules time limits calls for a dedicated tester, not a plug-in checker. The Kyoritsu 5406A measures real trip time in milliseconds and confirms trip current through its auto ramp function. It covers the 10mA to 500mA sensitivities found on domestic and commercial boards, so one unit handles most jobs.

Set the rated tripping current, plug into the protected outlet, and the 5406A drives test current until the RCD trips. The result holds on the large LCD, and a 0 and 180 degree phase switch returns both best and worst trip times. Three wiring-check LEDs flag reversed phase and neutral before any test starts. Powered from the circuit under test with no battery to go flat, the 5406A stays ready for a one-off check or a full day on the boards.

        Features

        • Five test functions — x1/2, x1, x5, DC test and auto ramp cover sensitivity, trip time, fast trip, DC-sensitive and trip-out current checks.
        • Auto ramp test — drives current from 20 percent up to 110 percent of the rated tripping current to find the actual trip-out current.
        • Rated tripping current range — selectable 10, 20, 30, 200, 300 and 500mA settings suit domestic and commercial residual current devices.
        • Type AC and Type A testing — checks both AC-sensitive and DC-sensitive (pulsating DC) residual current devices.
        • Standard and Selective RCDs — handles General (G) and time-delayed Selective (S) device types in one tester.
        • Phase angle switch — the 0 and 180 degree selector tests on both half-cycles to return minimum and maximum trip times.
        • Three wiring-check LEDs — show correct phase-earth and phase-neutral polarity and flag reversed wiring at the socket.
        • Digital LCD readout — the 5406A uses a 3 1/2 digit display that shows trip time in milliseconds with auto data hold after the test.
        • Constant current source — keeps readings accurate when mains voltage fluctuates during a test.
        • No battery required — the 5406A runs on the 230V supply under test, so there is nothing to recharge or replace.
        • Over-temperature and over-voltage protection — halts the test and warns if the internal resistor overheats or phase-earth voltage exceeds about 260V.
        • IP54 and CAT III 300V — rated to IEC 61557 and IEC 61010; the 5406A is not submersible and not rated above CAT III 300V at the instrument.

        Where to use

        • New installation verification — running RCD trip time and trip current checks with the 5406A on a new switchboard before sign-off.
        • Periodic safety testing — scheduled RCD checks on commercial sites and rental properties under a maintenance program.
        • Test and tag programs — verifying socket-protected circuits and portable RCDs as part of an electrical safety routine.
        • Domestic switchboard upgrades — confirming 30mA RCDs and RCBOs trip correctly after a board change with the 5406A.
        • Commercial and industrial boards — checking 100mA, 300mA and 500mA devices on distribution boards during installation testing.
        • RCD fault finding — using the 5406A auto ramp test to see whether a device trips early from standing leakage current.

The Kyoritsu 5406A is built for single-phase 230V AC systems and is not rated for three-phase 400V line-to-line testing. It is not submersible and should be kept clear of wet hands and earthed metalwork during a test. The instrument does not measure insulation resistance, loop impedance or continuity, which need separate functions.

        (5406A)

The 5406A is built to IEC 61557-1, IEC 61557-6 and IEC 61010-1 CAT III 300V for installation testing. It measures the trip time and trip current of residual current devices, which is the check electricians record during RCD verification.

The 5406A tests Standard (General) and Selective time-delayed RCDs, plus Type AC and DC-sensitive Type A devices. Rated tripping current settings cover 10, 20, 30, 200, 300 and 500mA, suiting most domestic and commercial residual current devices.

The auto ramp test raises the test current from 20 percent up to 110 percent of the rated tripping current. It reports the actual current at which the RCD trips, which helps confirm the device is within characteristic and not tripping early from leakage.

The 5406A uses no battery. It draws power from the 230V circuit under test, so there is nothing to charge or replace before a job. A shoulder strap and cord case are supplied to keep both hands free during testing.

The 5406A ships with a moulded-plug socket lead (Model 7125) for outlet testing. For testing directly at the distribution board or lighting circuits, the optional Kyoritsu 7121B distribution board lead works with the same instrument.

The Kyoritsu 5406A carries a one-year warranty for both domestic and commercial use, starting from the invoice date. Claims are handled on a return-to-Sparky-Direct basis. Keep your proof of purchase, as it is needed for any warranty claim.

The 5406A is a single-phase 230V AC RCD tester and is not rated for three-phase 400V line-to-line testing. It does not measure insulation resistance, loop impedance or continuity; those checks need a separate multifunction or insulation tester.

The Kyoritsu 5406A is available online from Sparky Direct, with Australia-wide delivery to any state or territory including regional areas. Sparky Direct is an Australian electrical wholesaler established in 2005, supplying more than 500,000 customers with transparent trade pricing.
