Learn more by watching our Klein Tools VDV500-820 | Tone & Probe PRO Wire Tracing Kit video.
The Klein Tools VDV500-820 is a tone and probe wire tracing kit for non-energised voice, data and video cabling, rated for extra-low voltage circuits below 60 volts. The kit pairs a Toner-PRO tone generator with a Probe-PRO inductive tracing probe, and both tools ship inside a padded, divided zipper pouch. The VDV500-820 generates five tone cadences and also tests continuity and polarity through angled bed-of-nails clips or an RJ11 test plug.
Chasing an unlabelled cable through a wall cavity or a double brick chase costs more time on site than the run itself. The VDV500-820 applies a traceable tone to a single conductor or a wire pair, so the probe identifies the far end without opening plasterboard. An automatic continuity check below 10 kilohms runs at power on, flagging a short circuit before any toning begins. On existing telephone points the polarity indication confirms normal or reversed wiring in the same connection.
A tone and probe kit earns its position in the bag on the fault-finding jobs nobody quotes accurately. The Probe-PRO uses inductive amplification with a signal strength readout and volume adjustment. One data run then separates from a bundle in a comms cabinet within minutes. A work light on the probe tip covers ceiling spaces and under-floor cavities where a torch occupies a hand. Both instruments operate on the supplied AAA alkaline cells, and 120 hours of active toner runtime keeps the kit ready between call-outs.
The VDV500-820 is not rated for energised mains wiring and connects only to de-energised cabling. Voltage protection stops at 60 volts in test mode and 20 volts in tone mode, so connecting either tool to live AC can damage it and creates a shock hazard. Neither instrument is sealed against moisture, so do not use them wet or in damp exposed locations.

No. The Toner-PRO and Probe-PRO are built for extra-low voltage cabling below 60 volts and only when that cabling is de-energised. Voltage protection is 60 volts in test mode and 20 volts in tone mode. Connecting either tool to live mains AC can damage it and creates a shock hazard.
Clip the red and black bed-of-nails clips to the two wires, switch the toner on and check the CONT indicator reads green. Select a tone, then sweep the probe tip slowly across the cable at the far end. Volume peaks over each toned conductor and drops between them.
The RJ11 test plug works with RJ11, RJ12 and RJ45 jacks. The tone transmits on the two centre conductors of the inserted plug: pins 2 and 3 for RJ11, pins 3 and 4 for RJ12, and pins 4 and 5 for RJ45. The bed-of-nails clips are not used in that mode.
Five cadences let one cable be told apart from another when several runs are toned on the same site. Three constant tones cover 800 Hz, 1000 Hz and 1500 Hz, and two alternating tones switch between 800/1000 Hz and 1000/1500 Hz. Tone output is rated at 8 dBm.
The tone generator runs about 120 hours of active use and the probe about 25 hours, both on four AAA alkaline cells. Standby and storage life is around three years. The toner powers off after 60 minutes of inactivity and the probe after 10 minutes, which protects the cells between jobs.
The kit carries a one year warranty for domestic use and a one year warranty for commercial use. Warranty runs from the invoice date, and the warranty method is return to Sparky Direct. Contact the customer service team with the order number to start a claim.
The Toner-PRO transmits a tone over more than 1000 feet, roughly 300 metres of cable, at a rated output of 8 dBm. That range covers domestic and light commercial runs end to end. The tone transmits on non-energised wiring only, through the bed-of-nails clips or the RJ11 test plug.
