Learn more by watching our Major Tech MT936 | Non-Contact Phase Rotation Meter video.
The Major Tech MT936 is a non-contact phase rotation meter that determines 3-phase sequence over insulated conductors, rated 70V to 1000V AC. The MT936 clamps onto conductors up to 30mm without exposing live parts, and is built to IEC 61010-1 at CAT IV 600V and CAT III 1000V. It uses colour LED indication and an audible buzzer to confirm clockwise or anti-clockwise rotation.
Getting phase sequence wrong on a 3-phase connection drives motors, pumps, and compressors in reverse, risking mechanical damage at startup. Contact phase testers require exposed terminals, which means working adjacent to live conductors to obtain a reading. The MT936 determines phase rotation across the conductor insulation, so there is no need to expose the cores. Its clamp opens to 30mm, accommodating most sub-mains and feeder cables at the switchboard.
Licensed electricians reach for the MT936 to confirm rotation before energising motor circuits or commissioning three-phase equipment. The built-in magnet holds the unit on a distribution board or metal enclosure, freeing both hands to position the clamps. Green and red LEDs plus a buzzer give an immediate call on direction, and a brightness button lifts LED visibility in full sun. For commissioning and fault-finding work, it keeps phase checks quick and non-invasive.
The MT936 carries an IP40 rating, so it is not sealed against water and should not be used in wet, damp, or submerged conditions. It reads phase rotation only and does not measure voltage, insulation resistance, or continuity. Keep readings within the rated 70 to 1000V AC range and within the CAT IV 600V or CAT III 1000V limits.
(MT936)
It is used to check the phase rotation of 3-phase systems before connecting equipment like motors.
It ensures motors and equipment run in the correct direction and avoids damage on startup.
It works without touching conductors, making it safer and quicker to use.
No. It clamps over insulated conductors, so no exposure is needed.
The MT936 runs on a single 9V battery. A low-battery warning flashes the power LED at about 7.2V and shuts the unit off near 6.2V to protect the reading. Auto power-off cuts in after roughly 10 minutes idle to preserve battery life.
