The Major Tech MT936 is a non-contact phase rotation meter that determines 3-phase sequence over insulated conductors, rated 70V to 1000V AC. The MT936 clamps onto conductors up to 30mm without exposing live parts, and is built to IEC 61010-1 at CAT IV 600V and CAT III 1000V. It uses colour LED indication and an audible buzzer to confirm clockwise or anti-clockwise rotation.
Getting phase sequence wrong on a 3-phase connection drives motors, pumps, and compressors in reverse, risking mechanical damage at startup. Contact phase testers require exposed terminals, which means working adjacent to live conductors to obtain a reading. The MT936 determines phase rotation across the conductor insulation, so there is no need to expose the cores. Its clamp opens to 30mm, accommodating most sub-mains and feeder cables at the switchboard.
