Major Tech | Socket and Earth Leakage Tester 230V AC | CAT IV 300V Rated

The Major Tech MT310 is a plug-in socket and earth leakage tester for 3-wire 230V AC circuits, rated CAT IV 300V and CAT III 600V. The MT310 confirms socket wiring and polarity through neon indicators and shows the measured AC voltage on an LCD display. Six fixed trip current settings from 10mA to 35mA let the operator test an earth leakage circuit breaker from the outlet.

Verifying a run of outlets means confirming polarity and earth continuity at the socket, not only at the switchboard. Unpacking a multimeter and test leads at every point interrupts the sequence. A plug-in tester reads the circuit in seconds, and the AC voltage indication on the LCD confirms supply level at the same time. On rental turnovers and pre-handover inspections, that saves repeated walks back to the switchboard.

For a licensed electrician the MT310 sits in the top of the tool bag and earns its place on fault-finding call-outs. Plug it in, interpret the neon indication, and the wiring status is established before an appliance attracts blame. The six fixed test currents from 10mA to 35mA also demonstrate that an earth leakage circuit breaker operates correctly on site. It functions as a compact secondary tester an apprentice carries alongside the primary instrument.

        Features

        • Socket ELCB testing — tests earth leakage circuit breakers on 3-wire 230V AC circuits directly from a standard socket outlet.
        • Six fixed test currents — 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35mA settings, selected before the test is run.
        • 10mA saturation setting — the lowest setting is used for testing saturation and to eliminate nuisance tripping.
        • Separate test button — the trip test runs from a dedicated button, kept clear of the wiring indication function.
        • AC voltage on LCD — the MT310 displays measured AC voltage from 150V AC to 245V AC while plugged in.
        • Neon wiring indication — bright neons show wiring correct, no earth, live and neutral reversed, no neutral, live and earth reversed, or no live.
        • Test current accuracy — rated at plus or minus 1.75mA at 220V AC across the selectable current range.
        • CAT IV 300V and CAT III 600V — the MT310 carries measurement category ratings suited to 230V distribution circuits.
        • Double injection rubber housing — the moulded body takes knocks in a tool bag and on site.
        • 130g compact body — measures 130 x 69 x 32mm and weighs 130g, so it travels in a pouch rather than a case.
        • Fixed current settings only — test current is stepped between six values rather than ramped, and the display shows voltage rather than a trip time.
        • 230V system operation — the MT310 operates on 230V systems and indicates voltage across a 150V AC to 245V AC span.

        Where to use

        • New circuit verification — confirms polarity and earth at each outlet once a new run of GPOs is energised.
        • Rental and pre-handover checks — the MT310 lets an electrician walk a property and check every socket in one pass.
        • Fault-finding call-outs — settles whether a dead or misbehaving appliance sits on a correctly wired outlet.
        • Earth leakage breaker testing — trips the protecting device from the socket using a selected current between 10mA and 35mA.
        • Nuisance tripping investigations — the 10mA setting supports saturation testing where a breaker trips without an obvious cause.
        • Switchboard upgrade work — confirms outlets read correctly after new earth leakage protection is fitted at the board.
        • Apprentice and second-tester duty — the MT310 gives a trainee a simple check tool that leaves the main meter free.
        • Maintenance rounds — the 130g body suits routine socket checks across a facility or a portfolio of properties.

The MT310 is built for 3-wire 230V AC socket outlets and is not intended for other supply systems. Voltage indication covers 150V AC to 245V AC, so it does not stand in for a general purpose meter across a wider range. It plugs into an outlet and does not connect to fixed wiring or bare terminals.

Verified Sparky Direct customer reviews: Major Tech MT310 | Socket ELCB Tester (MT310)

"It's simple, cheap and does the job." — Graeme

"Very good product showing voltage and polarity status." — Kelly

"Brilliant piece of handy test equipment." — Dave

        (MT310)

Plug the tester into a 3-wire 230V AC socket outlet. Select a test current between 10mA and 35mA, then press the separate test button. The protecting device should trip. Neon indicators show the wiring status of the circuit and the LCD shows measured AC voltage.

The display shows measured AC voltage, from 150V AC to 245V AC. Test current is selected from six fixed settings: 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35mA. There is no trip time readout, so the tester confirms that a device trips rather than how quickly it trips.

The tester operates on 230V systems and tests 3-wire 230V AC circuits. Voltage indication runs from 150V AC to 245V AC, which covers standard Australian single phase supply measured at the outlet.

The neons indicate wiring correct, no earth, live and neutral reversed, no neutral, live and earth reversed, and no live. Reading the neon pattern settles the wiring status of the circuit before any test current is applied.

The 10mA setting is used for testing saturation and to eliminate nuisance tripping. Starting low and stepping up through 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35mA shows the current at which the protecting device operates.

amended review on 24 May 2022

My original post was in error and I wish to apologise and correct it. The spec in the manual clearly states the display with change to 0L if the real voltage exceeds 245V and this is what my unit does. The slight problem is my display seems to be about 5V above actual so it can display up to about 249V before tapping out (at around ~244.5V. Major Tech were good enough to call me and explain the situation.
