Major Tech | Data and Video Cable Tester 305m | RJ45 and Coaxial

The Major Tech MTC20 is a handheld data and video cable tester that maps and checks network and coaxial runs. It tests RJ45-terminated network cable and coaxial cable with F connectors at lengths up to 305 metres. The MTC20 flags split pairs, opens, shorts, reversals, miswires, and shield status through a bank of clear LED indicators. It runs on two AAA batteries and ships with a detachable remote terminator for long runs.

Structured cabling faults are hard to chase once the cable disappears into a wall or ceiling. A drop that will not link, a patch lead that fails, or a coax run with no signal all need checking before the wall goes back on. The MTC20 confirms continuity and correct pin-to-pin wiring on both data and video cable, so faults show up on the LED bank rather than after handover. Its detachable remote terminator lets one person test a run end to end across a building.

Data and comms work sits alongside power for a lot of sparkies, and a single tester that covers RJ45 and coaxial saves carrying two tools. The MTC20 checks Cat 3 through to Cat 7a plus coax, shielded or unshielded, so it handles most jobs from old phone cable to current data runs. It runs on two AAA batteries with a low-battery indicator, so there is no charging routine before a callout. At 122 grams it drops into a tool pouch and stays out of the way until a run needs checking.

        Features

        • Data and video testing — the MTC20 checks RJ45-terminated network cable and coaxial cable with F connectors from a single unit.
        • Tests up to 305 metres — confirms continuity and wiring on runs up to 305 metres, covering full-length building cable.
        • Fault detection — identifies split pairs, opens, shorts, reversals, cross-overs, and miswires on data cable.
        • LED status bank — separate indicators show twisted pairs, continuity, shield status, split, reversal, miswire, short, and low battery.
        • Shield status check — the S indicator reports whether a shielded cable's screen is connected end to end.
        • Detachable remote terminator — the RJ45 remote clips off so one person can test both ends of a long run.
        • Wide cable support — works with shielded and unshielded Cat 3, Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6a, Cat 7, and Cat 7a, plus coax.
        • Split pair detection — the MTC20 detects split pairs on cable runs of 0.5 metres or longer.
        • AAA battery power — runs on two AAA 1.5V batteries, with a low-battery indicator built into the LED bank.
        • Compact and light — measures 141 x 54.5 x 27.8 mm and weighs 122 grams for pouch carry.
        • Wiring tester only — the MTC20 maps wiring and continuity; it does not measure bandwidth, PoE, or network throughput.

        Where to use

        • Data and comms rough-in — check every RJ45 drop before sheeting and handover on new builds and fit-outs.
        • Structured cabling fault-finding — trace dead drops and failed patch leads back to split pairs, shorts, or miswires.
        • Coaxial and antenna runs — confirm continuity on TV and satellite coax terminated with F connectors.
        • Office and commercial fit-outs — the MTC20 verifies long cable runs across floors using the detachable remote.
        • Patch lead and cable batch testing — sort good leads from faulty ones on the bench before they go on a job.
        • Service and maintenance calls — the MTC20 gives a fast wiring check when a data or TV point stops working.

The MTC20 maps wiring, continuity, and shield status; it does not certify cable to a performance category or measure bandwidth, PoE, or signal loss. It is a wiring and continuity tester, not a live-circuit tester, so it must not be connected to energised mains or any cable carrying more than 60V DC or 55V AC. Performance certification for warranty-backed data installs sits outside what this unit does.

        (MTC20)

The MTC20 tests RJ45-terminated network cable and coaxial cable with F connectors. It supports shielded and unshielded Cat 3, Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6a, Cat 7, and Cat 7a, plus coax, on runs up to 305 metres.

The tester detects split pairs, opens, shorts, reversals, cross-overs, and miswires. A bank of LED indicators shows twisted-pair status, continuity, shield status, split, reversal, miswire, short, and low battery, so a fault reads straight off the unit.

The MTC20 does not certify cable to a performance category. It is a wiring and continuity tester, also called a cable mapper, that confirms the pins are wired correctly and the run is continuous end to end. It does not measure bandwidth or signal loss.

The remote terminator clips off the main unit. You leave the tester at one end of a cable run and place the RJ45 remote at the far end, then read the result on the LED bank. One person can test a long run across a building without a helper.

The tester runs on two AAA 1.5V batteries. A low-battery indicator sits in the LED bank and warns when the cells are getting flat, so a weak battery does not cause a misread during testing. Battery power keeps the unit portable for on-site work.

The MTC20 carries a two-year warranty for both domestic and commercial use through Sparky Direct. Warranty starts from the invoice date and is handled on a return-to-base basis. Faulty units are forwarded to Major Tech's authorised service centre for assessment.

The MTC20 is for unpowered data and coaxial cable only. It must not be connected to energised mains or any cable carrying more than 60V DC or 55V AC between pins. Isolate and disconnect a cable before testing to protect the unit.

The Major Tech MTC20 is available online from Sparky Direct, with Australia-wide delivery to any state or territory including regional areas. Sparky Direct is an Australian electrical wholesaler established in 2005, supplying more than 500,000 customers with transparent trade pricing.
