The Schneider Electric A9F44140 is a single pole miniature circuit breaker rated 40A with a C trip curve, from the Acti9 iC60N Disbo range. The A9F44140 is rated 6000A Icn to EN/IEC 60898-1 and 10kA Icu at 220 to 240V AC to EN/IEC 60947-2. It carries Category A utilisation classification and switches both AC and DC circuits. The breaker measures 18mm wide, a single pole width, and clips onto DIN rail.
At 40A the device is usually protecting a sub-mains run, a ducted air conditioner, or a fixed wired appliance circuit drawing close to the cable limit. Boards that also distribute DC control or battery supplies alongside those loads need a breaker certified for both networks. A DC arc has no zero crossing to assist extinction, so the interrupting mechanism must be rated for DC duty. The A9F44140 is rated for AC and DC networks, with DC operation to 72V and a C characteristic that absorbs compressor and motor inrush.
Stocking a single breaker certified for both duties cuts the number of part numbers carried on the van. The A9F44140 mounts on standard DIN rail at a single 18mm pole width, so board layout and switchboard schedules stay unchanged. Terminals accept 35mm² rigid or 25mm² flexible conductor, a larger cage than the lower rated devices in the range. The handle seals in the off or on position for isolation before downstream work starts.
The A9F44140 is not a residual current device and provides no earth leakage protection on its own. It is rated IP20, so it must be installed inside a switchboard or enclosure and is not suitable for exposed or wet locations. DC use is limited to 72V, so it should not be fitted to higher voltage DC circuits.

The A9F44140 is a multi-standard breaker, so the same device suits domestic boards and industrial isolation duty. It meets IEC/EN 60898-1 with a 6000A short circuit rating at 240V, the figure most Australian switchboard schedules are written to. Under IEC/EN 60947-2 it holds 10kA at 220 to 240V.
Switchboard work must be carried out by a licensed electrician. For the sparky fitting it, the A9F44140 clips straight onto DIN rail and takes one 18mm module, so it drops into a spare way with no extra fixings. The terminals are big enough to land a 40A sub-mains conductor without a reducer.
A C curve breaker takes a bigger surge before the magnetic trip operates, so it rides through the inrush that motors, compressors and LED driver banks draw at switch-on. A B curve trips sooner, which suits lighting and general power. Fit a C curve where inrush would otherwise trip the board on every start.
The A9F44140 takes clip-on Acti9 accessories without being swapped out: auxiliary and signalling contacts, remote monitoring, and Vigi blocks that add residual current protection to the breaker already on the rail. They mount to the side of the device, so the board layout barely changes.
The Acti9 iC60N is rated for 20,000 mechanical operations and 10,000 electrical operations, which is far more switching than a domestic or commercial board sees in its service life. It runs from -35°C to 70°C, so a hot roof space or an unventilated enclosure sits inside its range.
The A9F44140 protects against overload and short circuit only. It does not sense earth leakage, so it will not trip on a fault to earth and it does not protect a person against electric shock. Where RCD protection is required, that comes from an RCBO or a Vigi block fitted to the breaker.
The Acti9 iC60N is IP20 as supplied, which means finger-safe but not sealed, so it belongs inside a switchboard or distribution board. Mounted in an enclosure it reaches IP40. It does not flush mount into a wall and is not rated for exposed or outdoor positions.
