        Sprecher+Schuh | Thermal Overload Relay 5.5-7.5A 690V CT7N Series | Class 10A Bimetallic

The Sprecher+Schuh CT7N-23-B75 is a bimetallic thermal overload relay with an adjustment range of 5.5 to 7.5 amps, rated 690V AC and set to trip class 10A under IEC/EN 60947-4-1. The CT7N-23-B75 direct-mounts to CA7-9 through CA7-23 contactors to form a compact starter assembly. Each unit is factory current calibrated at full operating temperature, at both the largest and smallest current in its range.

Motor circuits fail quietly: a pump draws a little more current each month, a conveyor jams under load, or one phase disappears and the winding cooks before anyone notices. A correctly dialled thermal overload relay is the protection standing between that motor and a rewind invoice. The CT7N-23-B75 carries a differential tripping mechanism that senses phase loss and trips at 115% of full load current, ahead of the standard 120% threshold. A built-in compensation bimetal holds that characteristic across an ambient range of -20 to +60 degrees C.

Panel builders and maintenance sparkies stay with the CT7N line because the assembly work is short and the stock list is short with it. One overload block covers five contactor frame sizes from CA7-9 to CA7-23, so a service van carries fewer part numbers and still covers most light industrial work. The selectable manual or automatic reset means the same relay suits a manned line and an unattended pump set. A separate NO signal contact flags a trip back to a PLC on a different voltage from the control circuit.

        Features

        • 5.5 to 7.5 A adjustment range — the CT7N-23-B75 dial is set to the motor nameplate full load current, with a factor of 0.58 applied for wye-delta starters.
        • Trip class 10A — faster tripping than legacy class 20 blocks, matched to modern T-frame motors under normal starting conditions.
        • Bimetallic sensing element — factory current calibration at full operating temperature produces an accurate time-current curve at both ends of the range.
        • Phase loss sensitivity — the three-pole differential slider mechanism trips at 115% FLA on loss of a phase, in roughly 45 seconds.
        • 120% ultimate trip rating — the CT7N-23-B75 trips on sustained overload above 120% of the dialled full load current setting.
        • Ambient temperature compensation — an additional bimetal strip holds the tripping characteristic constant from -20 to +60 degrees C.
        • Selectable reset switch — manual and automatic reset modes are chosen on the unit, with no change of part number.
        • Isolated auxiliary contacts — one NC trip contact and one separate NO signal contact allow a trip signal voltage different from the control voltage.
        • Direct contactor coupling — mounts straight onto CA7-9 to CA7-23 contactors, and onto electronic DC contactors CA7-9E to CA7-55E and two-winding DC contactors CA7-60D to CA7-97D.
        • 690V rated operating voltage — 690V AC and 440V DC under IEC, 600V AC under UL and CSA, at 50/60 Hz.
        • M4 screw terminals — take 2 x 1.5 to 4 mm2 fine stranded with ferrule, torqued to 1.5 to 2.2 Nm.
        • IP00 enclosure rating — the relay is a bare component and must be installed inside an enclosure or panel; it is finger safe to VDE 0106 Part 100 only.

        Where to use

        • Conveyor drives — the CT7N-23-B75 suits belt and roller drives in the 5.5 to 7.5 amp band where jams load the motor without stalling it outright.
        • Pump sets and pressure systems — automatic reset mode keeps an unattended bore or transfer pump running after a short thermal event clears.
        • Fan and ventilation motors — extraction and supply fans running long duty cycles benefit from ambient compensated tripping in hot plant rooms.
        • Light industrial machinery — the CT7N-23-B75 covers workshop machines, compressors, and small process equipment in low-criticality applications.
        • DOL starter assemblies — panel builders close-couple the relay to a CA7 contactor to make up a compact direct-on-line starter.
        • Variable frequency drive monitoring — the CT7N series is chosen where drive-controlled motor current needs an independent thermal check.
        • Single phase motor circuits — each element carries the motor current, giving the same characteristics shown for three phase operation.
        • Switchboard retrofits — replaces eutectic alloy overload blocks and heater elements on older starter panels.

The CT7N-23-B75 is not a short-circuit protective device and requires back-up fuse protection, rated to a maximum of 25 A gL/gG for this catalogue number. It is rated IP00 and must not be installed outside a panel or enclosure. It cannot be used with true DC contactors, and it is not suitable for motors drawing outside the 5.5 to 7.5 amp setting band.

        (CT7N-23-B75)

The CT7N-23-B75 is built to IEC/EN 60947-1, 60947-4-1, and 60947-5-1, with a class 10A trip characteristic. It also carries cULus listing under file E33916 and CSA C22.2 No. 14. Outer housing parts are rated UL94 V0 and the materials are RoHS compliant.

The relay close-couples directly to CA7-9 through CA7-23 contactors, forming a compact starter package. Main terminals are M4 screw type, taking 2 x 1.5 to 4 mm2 fine stranded with ferrule, torqued to 1.5 to 2.2 Nm. A CT7N-37-P-A adapter is available if separate DIN-rail or panel mounting is needed.

The relay mounts to CA7-9 through CA7-23 AC contactors, electronic DC contactors CA7-9E to CA7-55E, and two-winding DC contactors CA7-60D to CA7-97D. It cannot be used with true DC contactors. Check the contactor frame size against the relay catalogue number before ordering.

Set the dial to the motor nameplate full load current for motors with a service factor of 1.15 or greater. For a service factor of 1.0, use 90 percent of nameplate full load current. In a wye-delta starter, multiply the rated operating current by 0.58 before setting.

A differential tripping mechanism inside the relay senses unequal pole currents and trips at 115 percent of full load current, compared with the 120 percent ultimate trip rating under balanced conditions. Under a phase loss condition the three-pole slider mechanism trips in approximately 45 seconds.

The reset switch on the unit selects manual or automatic mode. For remote resetting, a CMR7N remote reset solenoid is available in a range of AC and DC coil voltages. A D7 Reset external reset button suits relays mounted inside enclosures, and a CT7N-RA3 adaptor gives a larger reset actuation surface.

The relay operates from -20 to +60 degrees C, with an ambient compensation bimetal holding the trip characteristic constant across that band. Storage range is -55 to +80 degrees C. Mechanical and electrical life is rated at 0.25 million operations at maximum contact rating. Sparky Direct lists a one year warranty.
