HPM | Programmable Weatherproof Light Sensitive Switch IP56 3 Wire | Surface Mount

The HPM PE170R2 is a programmable light sensitive switch rated 230–240V AC, IP56 weatherproof, for controlling outdoor lights. It turns lights on at sunset and off at a time you set (between 9 pm and 4 am). The PE170R2 is different from standard PE cells: it keeps the same off time every night of the year, even as sunset times change through summer and winter. The unit stores your settings in non-volatile memory, so they survive a power cut. It is suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial outdoor lighting and fits the older PE170 base.

Sunset times change through the year: summer sunsets are late, winter sunsets are early. Time-delay photoelectric switches turn on at sunset, but their off time shifts with the seasons. A 6-hour delay cuts lights at 1 am in summer but 11 pm in winter — two different times for the same setting. This forces manual adjustment twice a year. The PE170R2 lets you set one fixed off time (e.g. 1 am every night) and adjust the light-level trigger separately. This way, lights cut off at the same time all year, and manual adjustment becomes unnecessary.

Electricians choose the PE170R2 for retrofit work because it fits the old PE170 base without rewiring. The dial adjustment is simple: no complex codes, no torch-flashing button sequences, no confusion with the older model. The non-volatile memory ensures the program survives power cuts, so you do not need repeat callouts to reprogram the lights. This means faster jobs and fewer callbacks.

        Features

        • User-defined off time — set lights to turn off between 9 pm and 4 am (or at dawn depending on natural light level) in 30-minute increments, consistent every night of the year regardless of season.
        • Adjustable lux setting — a dial control lets you tune the light-level trigger for on time, accommodating different outdoor conditions and twilight sensitivities without reprogramming.
        • Non-volatile memory — the programmed settings are stored locally and restored automatically if mains power is interrupted, avoiding the need for manual reconfiguration.
        • Simple dial adjustment — no complex sequences or factory codes; a straightforward dial replaces the button-counting frustration of older models.
        • IP56 weatherproof rating — sealed enclosure prevents water ingress in splash zones and outdoor exposed locations, suitable for wall-mount outdoor installations.
        • 3 wire connection — neutral, active, and earth supplied; pairs with 3-wire circuit wiring without the need for permanent live connections.
        • Maximum load 2400 W incandescent or 2400 W halogen — handles traditional outdoor lamp loads; LED installations up to 1000 W and compact fluorescent up to 1000 VA are also supported.
        • Minimum load 5 W — suitable for LED and compact fluorescent circuits that draw very little standby power.
        • Surface mount installation — sits on the wall or post without requiring a deep mounting box, reducing installation labour on existing installations.
        • Retrofit to PE170 base — the PE170R2 head is designed to fit the older surface mount PE170 housing, allowing upgrades without rewiring or box replacement.
        • Operating temperature 0°C to 50°C — tolerates Australian outdoor temperature ranges without performance degradation or component failure.
        • Stand-by power consumption under 1 W — negligible power draw when lights are off, keeping idle running costs minimal on the lighting circuit.

        Where to use

        • Car park lighting — outdoor vehicle areas benefit from consistent night-long operation with a defined cut-off, reducing energy waste and light pollution.
        • Street frontage and building entry lighting — shops, warehouses, and commercial buildings often require lights on from sunset until a set time (e.g. 11 pm or 1 am) regardless of when the sun actually sets.
        • Residential outdoor security lighting — dusk-to-midnight or dusk-to-dawn operation at a set hour rather than following the calendar-driven sunrise/sunset times.
        • Industrial outdoor work areas — loading docks, tanker parks, and site perimeters that require lights controlled by daylight sensing but with operator-set turn-off times.
        • Retrofit upgrades of existing PE170 installations — the PE170R2 drops into the same mounting space, avoiding cost and downtime of rewiring or new enclosures.
        • Not suitable for indoor use — the IP56 weatherproof design and outdoor lux sensing are engineered for exterior light, not interior ambient control. Use standard indoor photoelectric switches for internal spaces.

        (PE170R2)

Conventional photoelectric switches work on a fixed time delay from sunset (e.g. "on at sunset, off 6 hours later"). As sunset times change with the seasons, the off time drifts: winter may cut lights at 11 pm, summer at 1 am. The PE170R2 lets you set a fixed off time (e.g. 1 am every night) and adjust the lux trigger independently, so the off time stays consistent all year.

It is rated for incandescent/halogen loads up to 2400 W, compact fluorescent up to 1000 VA, and LED up to 1000 W. Minimum load is 5 W, so low-power LED circuits are supported without ballast.

It is IP56 rated, which means it is splash-proof and suitable for exposed outdoor mounting. It is not fully submersible (IP67/68), so keep it out of standing water or high-pressure spray applications, but normal rain and spray on a wall or post installation are fine.

Yes. Non-volatile memory saves your off time and lux settings in the unit itself. If the mains supply is interrupted, the settings are restored automatically when power returns, so you do not need to reprogram after a blackout.

Yes. The PE170R2 head fits into the older PE170 surface mount base, so you can upgrade without rewiring the circuit or replacing the wall-mounted enclosure. The connection terminals and mounting are compatible.

It Just Works on 13 March 2021

So - things you never think about..... the tap in the kitchen, just working. The alternator in the car, Just working. The light sensor for the front lights, just working...... until something happens. We used to have a PE170R controlling the front lights and one evening we went outside and the world was dark.... Out with the flashlight... Power cycle the circuit - One, Two, Three flashes and see the Leds blinking - Push the button 30 times to set the default stay on till dawn.... See the lights turn on, and walk back inside.... Then the next night - Outside again at 11pm, flashing the *&*$^%$ torch at the unit and fiddling with buttons.... Finally I decided to replace it. This new unit doesn't muck around with the flashlight flashes - wire it up and it just works. Now when I go outside at night, the front lights are on. It's as simple as that. 25 stars for simply doing the job it was designed for. Anybody want a cheap PE170R - It doesn't have too many screwdriver holes rammed through it out of frustration.... May not be waterproof.....
